2 antiviruses

i know u should not have 2 antiviruses.

I have Kav 5.0 pro realtime protection.

is it safe to have another antiviruses and if yes which antivirus goes good with kav.

like another antivirus that removes things that Kav does not.

is it safe coz i always see threads with ppl having 2 antiviruses but i have tried it and i ended up formating my computer.

 

If I was to add to KAV I would go for some thing like Safensec 1.1 (with antivirus) Otherwise I would not load my system up but use an online scan maybe as a second opinion.

 

The problem is, KAV is not very friendly with other AVs. Other AVs do well in a 2-AV-setup, but KAV usually doesn't

I run NOD32 resident, and use KAV 5 Personal as an on demand supplement every now and then, or when I observe suspicious behavior although NOD says it's clean. I have not experienced any incompatibilities thus far.

I reccomend NOD32 as a backup to KAV, as its fantastic heuristic engine is a fine supplement to KAV's superb signature capabilities.

I think with KAV you do not need another AV.
Maybe you will give Ewido a try?

 

NOD might run well with KAV Personal, but with KAV Pro, other AVs could have difficulties due to ADS....

I also think KAV is good enough for almost any malware, maybe all you need is a behavior blocker like PrevX....hmm

While on a trial for KAV Pro, even while running with ADS, I encountered no difficulties.

 

Whether you NEED two AVs is not really the point for many of us who simply enjoy playing around with our security progs! What is more relevant is whether it is safe to do so.

I run KAV PRO 5.0.20 realtime and have AntiVir installed as a backup scanner, with its Guard unloaded and the Guard Service set to 'disabled'. For me this seems to work fine, though I would be interested in an expert view of this.

With KAV (which already has excellent all-around detection capabilities) I would recommend the following, in the following order:

1) ProcessGuard Licensed version: to firm up keylogger and rootkit protection as well as providing a hardened defense against trojans.

2) RegDefend: to catch unauthorized changes to the registry. If you install RegDefend, I would recommend adding the "RegRun Supplementary Entries" that Puff has graciously published on the RegDefend forum.

3) Ewido Free: on-demand scans to catch stray malware entries that may get by KAV. It happens, but rarely and the malware is usually some tracking cookie. I have a paid version (I like supporting vendors of good products) but truthfully, it has never caught anything since KAV is up-front.

4) NOD32: Its heuristics can supplement KAV but I do not know if it will catch anything that would get past the above defense. If you decide to install NOD32, you need to do a "custom install" and turn off all monitors - AMON, DMON, and IMON. The NOD32 kernel will be loaded, but will be deactivated, and you can run NOD32, with deep heuristics, from the control panel. In my trial usages of NOD32, it has never discovered anything that may have gotten past KAV.

5) UnHackMe: if you want extra rootkit protection but KAV and ProcessGuard seem to be enough.

6) CounterSpy (on-demand) : Like Ewido may pick up a stray tracking cookie that the others might miss. Nothing big, but if you like a pristine system, this kind of malware may enter the sytem, and the other ASs didn't catch.

This is based upon my experiences with all of these products for an extended period of time. Prevx Home would be another interesting product to protect the file directories if you accidently let a program past ProcessGuard and it was not detected by KAV (a highly unlikely event), but I am turned off by Prevx's monitoring all of the file events on my system and then selling this information to subscribers. But it is up to you. I would not recommend Prevx Pro, since I could never get it working on my system and others have reported problems running it with PG. I personally prefer PG to Prevx since it catches the executable right when it requests permission to execute. I believe the earlier the protection, the better.

You should use BitDefender free as a backup but I think that KAV is good enough for almost any malware.
Maybe all you need is another type of programs as ProcessGuard or Prevx.

so are u saying that if i have kav pro or personal, i dont really need additional antispyware (counterspy) or ewido (whatever it detects)? and if i dont own kav pro or personal i need counterspy and ewido (examples)?

 

KAV is one of the strongest antiviruses in all areas. Even trojans and spyware don't cause troubles to KAV.

Ever since I installed KAV 4.5 with extended databases, none of the anti-spy packages that I use (or trial) have found anything of significance including Giant, Microsoft, CounterSpy, Spybot, and Ad-aware. Ad-ware and CounterSpy will find some minor "tracking cookies" from time to time. Something that I can clean-up if I want to through the FireFox browser itself if I want to.

As a result, I no longer run any anti-spy in real-time though I continue to run on-demand scans with Giant every month or so - Ewido a bit more frequently along with some other ATs that I have. Actually, BitDefender's online scan, seems to find the most stuff nowadays beyond what KAV will detect.

I do have ProcessGuard and RegDefend in place which afford me proactive protection against a widebreath of malware and provide a great deal of added support beyond KAV - though KAV has shown itself to be plenty strong on its own. It is just that I like a more layered approach - with overlap.
