Default Defragmenting

I'm defragmenting my hard drive in safe mode, because it won't go past 1% in normal mode. Now it won't go past 10%. Any ideas?

Are you using Win 9.X?
If so, the only way I have ever been able to get the Windows defragmenter to work on a 98 machine is to:
Disable AV
Disable Firewall
Disable screensaver
Disable any additional "Active monitor" programs (process guard, tds, etc..)

I would recommend disconnecting from the internet all together if this is the case.

If you are using an NT based system (2000, NT, xp, etc..)
You could try PowerDefrag (NT Only) or any of the free tools (Diskeeper for example) works well.

Using Win98 + The built in defragmenter will take awhile.

Follow the steps I listed above and it should improve the time.

www.vopt.com is an Excellent defrag for win98 I use it and its free for 30 days.
Just make sure to shut down everything above before running or it or it will detect disk activity and stop.
