Exclamation Heads-up MSN and Hotmail users!

As of this writing, MSN/Hotmail's e-mail scanner (powered by Trend Micro) is not detecting the latest Mytob worm.

These are arriving in .zip files, and are packed with Morphine.

Beware.

There seem to be a lot of Mytop varients released on Friday and today. Saw AVG update twice yesterday and had a couple of updates from Nod32!

If you look at http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/ you can see that some of the mytop worms are on CPR (Controlled release or beta relase)

If concerned zip and password protect and send samples to trend virus labs at virus_doctor@trendmicro.co.uk They will normally reply to you with what they find.

Cheers

Jlo

Firecat,

Trend is on the threat and has a signature out since yesterday. MSN/Hotmail either don't have the latest pattern files, or something else is wrong in their setup somewhere.

Hi,

Yes but there have been many different varients released over the last 48hrs so it may be a new one which Trend is adding detection.

Think I will E mail Hotmail though to ask how often there scanner is set to update?

Would be interesting to know!

Thanks for the Heads up!

Thankfully I am with Nod32 as well which has detection added and detects newer varient with Advanced Heuristics.

Same issue as when Hotmail used McAfee. Apparently Hotmail doesn't update their AV to protect Hotmail users! Very bad, dear Microsoft.
I remember when McAfee added a worm and Hotmail's McAfee doesn't detect the worm in question.

I do use Yahoo! and I love it.

FastMail.fm - 10MB of free space and NO Anti-Virus protection (for free accounts).

Hey, does anyone know whether gmail does email scanning? Which AV does it use?

Have a great day

BTW, Those using Hotmail/MSN, just keep your real-time installed AV updated and you should be protected from Mytob.

Regards,
Firecat

GMail doesn't use any antivirus (yet). They however block all EXE,PIF,VBS etc files. Also ZIP archives which contain any of such files are also blocked.
The solution is not the best (it paint in the rear if you want to send someone a legitim app),but as it appears it's working very well. Haven't got a single worm on my account and i'm using it nearly one year.

Simple, don't open any e-mails with suspicious attachments. That's the BEST way to avoid catching that filthy virus.
