Securing Windows (not with tools)

Hi,

I have my own ideas about securing Windows besides having proper security tools in place (AV/AT/firewall, etc.).

But I wanted to know what you good people's opinions would be for the top few recommendations to secure an average user's Windows PC. I'm not going to say this person uses Outlook or IE or any specific software because I'm looking for general recommendations that would apply across the board.

Also, if your recommendation applies only to Windows 9x[me=msingle]or only to Windows NT/2000/XP if you would say so I'd appreciate it.[/me]

have enjoy reading your other posts and the replies.
as you most likely also realize.....considering your question...Windows by its very nature is insecure
use of the registry can/does offer some help....naturally messing in the registry is not suggested practice due to related dangers.....nevertheless for someone able to or willing to learn how to.....numerous tweaks can enhance security....on any windows os......
there is no particular link that I can post in this reply....
there are numerous other means of securing windows but again not widely known or used.......fe: means of running programs without use of the hard disc......even firewalls....
such a topic could easily be very consuming....so I will lay back and enjoy reading the replies

no you didn't.......if I read correctly it was directed at windows......which many would say is impossible to secure.

So besides switching to Mac or Linux, not using a PC, or not paying the electric bill any other suggestions?

1. The top suggestion I would give is the regular religious installation of applicable service packs and hotfixes from MS. That's the first thing I do, and it sure gives you a firmer base from which to build your security strategy.
2. You can play with NetBios/adapter bindings to help tighten up commonly exploited port "holes".
3. Remove unneeded services and apps from the startup.

Why do you ask? There's probably a lot of people who read information here who use it to their advantage in one way or another.
