newbie questions

hi, i'm trying out the trial version of Nod32 because of the many great reviews i've read about it. i have a few questions though:

i'm also testing avg antivirus (free) at the moment so the resident shield of it runs at startup. is it safe to run the nod resident monitor (amon i think?) at the same time or should i disable one?

can anyone explain to me how to configure nod for pop3. i'm not using outlook, i'm using incredimail. its easy enough to fill in the "parent server" and "port" boxes, but what do i type for "listen on"?

there are so many icons in the system tray. was wondering if there was a way to keep the program they represent running but disable the icon. i know you can for amon, but how about the icon for "control center" and the one for "pop3".

im guessing the resident scanner of nod will catch email viruses anyway without the pop3 scan, so if i wanted to stop that from running at startup by deleting it from the "Run" key in the registry, would it effect any other vital parts of nod?

same question as directly above for the nod control center (nod32cc.exe). i believe that is only for updates, yes? so if i would rather run pop3scan.exe and nod32cc.exe by clicking the icons from the start/programs/eset directory, would it be safe to stop them from running at startup without losing the most important nod function of virus scanning?

i like nod so far and it, as well as avg are the only antivirus i'm testing before i decide on one to buy. i'd like to get to know them first before i take the plunge though.

Having NOD myself for only two months I will let the NOD experts answer the NOD questions. As far as running two AV at the same time, conventional wisdom says "No". It's OK to have two AV on your system if you keep one of them off. Then when you want to use it, turn the other one off. Unless things have changed recently, I have always heard that keeping two of them active at the same time will usually get you into trouble. Good luck with your decision.

As mentioned, you should only have one resident monitor running. There might be no problems running both, but the safe thing is actually to only run one.

"Listen on" is an arbitrary number (preferably between 1024 and 65535), for example "47806". Then you should use "localhost" and "47806" as POP3-server and port in Incredimail.

In the current version, no. In the upcoming version, there will be only one tray icon.

If you try to execute an infected attachment, then Amon will stop it, with or without the POP3-scanner, yes.

No, it won't affect resident protection. However, with the POP3-scanner you could just deselect the "Autorun" checkbox, to stop it loading at startup.

Yes, but, unless you reinstall it and choose to not enable it, you have to manually remove the startup from the registry.

When you are done (and have restarted), you could always download "eicar.com" from http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm to make sure that the resident protection is still running and intercepting infected files.

well i turned off one of the resident scanners as suggested and i must admit it did make a difference. i'm not sure if it was becasue of two AV monitors running at the same time (or because i was reconfiguring my firewall) but UL/DL speeds were cut almost in half. when i turned off one of the scanners and rebooted, speeds were back to normal. too tired right now to find out the real reason tho

i did find out one quick thing.... nod32 seems to detect nested archive files 1 level better than avg. i tested using some archived viruses i have on disc. the archive was nested 4 deep and nod detected it whereas avg detected only 3 deep, also the presentation of a detected virus and options for actions is more user friendly in nod, however avg scanned my drives few seconds faster faster which surprised me a little, lastly, both have great support forums... anyway that's just a quick observation

(un)fortunately(?), I have no clue. And... I think it's better not to estimate. I don't want anyone to take any "bad" actions just because a product is released then or then. (like not using any security related product while waiting for a specific version)..

I want to avoid things like "Oh... if that product is released in only X timeperiods, I'll just wait till then." and such... ;P
