Need so clarification

I recently ran a full backup to a external HD(J) successfully. Then I tried to run an incremental BK the following day. That ran successfully too but assigned a new drive letter(K) to it. I don't understand that. The only thing on my external drive(J) is the full bk and I don't have a drive letter (K). Thanks
