Except for www.virus.gr, is there any trustworthy comparative tests of antivirus programs which can be used to prove that F-Secure is super AV killer?

Try VB100 (www.virusbtn.com). Now, F-Secure comes with three engines including the KAV 6.0 one (kaspersky's own only is 5.0 right now, so you can see why FS is better). So, if KAV gets a VB100 you can rest assured to say that F-Secure will also kill the same viruses.
Most times where F-Secure fails is because of the updates as Kaspersky updates hourly and F-Secure only daily, so some viruses may have a later remedy. F-Secure is not an AV killer. It is a malware killer. If you want to buy it, I highly recommend it! Regards, Firecat

Maybe kill but not get the VB100% logo. That's because the 2nd (and sometimes neglected) requirement is zero false positives. It has actually been the case couple of times in the past that Kaspersky got VB100 and F-Secure didn't because of a FP... Cheers Vlk |

AFAIK KAV 6.0 engine is just an F-Secure internal version. I doubt that some other company (F-Secure) is using newer engine than engine's developers (Kaspersky Labs in this case).
Yeah thats me,just on some other PC ![]() |

FP is important in judging one AV. that is why AntiVir and Quickheal is not making waves even though being decent virus killers. another thing about F-Secure is that the Orion scanning engine. it doesn't use any database so it is prone to generate FPs.
if you don't like Orion then don't install it, use the other two engines. one more thing i'd like to know, if KAV is using the 5.0 engine then how come F-Secure uses the 6.0 engine? eh?

Well, I don't know about how F-Secures uses AVP 6.0 engine either. Before v5.52, the KAV engine said version 4.0, now it says 6.0.
Kaspersky's got a beta of KAV 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange ready, maybe they're using something built along those lines.. Quickheal's not got good detection (at least for Trojans). Regards, Firecat

OK I see, but this (important) aspect - reaction time - is not taken into cosideration by VB at all...

a lot of AVs don't detect trojans as nicely as KAV. it doesn't necessarily mean they are bad. prior to v5.52 F-Secure used AVP engine but it was customized. so we shouldn't consider F-Secure AVP and KAV AVP as similar.
yeah KAV is very fast churning out signatures. i wonder how many work in those labs. nope reacton time is not considered in VB, otherwise Norton and McAfee would have been losers.

Alongside this, it uses 2 home-made engines known as Orion and Libra. Libra is used by F-Secure to release updates for certain virus outbreaks if Kaspersky has not done so already (very rare), and Orion is basically just a heuristic engine, which also accounts for some rare false positives which occur with F-Secure but not Kaspersky.

can anybody help me?
I have been using Norton for years now, not too happy with what it does to my computer, slow downs, etc., I don't know too much about anti virus programs, I read at different places about which is the best one, I'm guessing that is subjective, since you could find sites that say they are all the best. I have heard that just about every a. v. software was the best one to get. the ones I am considering now are, mcafee (9), gdata 2005, kaspersky (5), f-secure 2005, acravir 2005, possibly some others. my most important quality is prevention of viruses and firewall, if need be I could buy a separate firewall but I would prefer an all in 1 program. price does matter but I'm willing to pay to get what is actually the best product for an everyday home user. I wouldn't do that, personally. mainly bloatware...bugs...if area (in that suite) fails, chances are the other sections will fail...exploits cause of that...cpu usage is huge, and some other details... Quote:
yes, we definately know what you mean...norton...but but but it is userfriendly Quote:
correct bout that...very much all tests are subjectif or are just: "who paid more...ohhh...ok, you are our number one" things ... some tests are quite good like av comparatives and scheinsicherheit project...just my thought bout this (I know ... subjective right?) Quote:
Definately try NOD32 , I kid you not... but not going to be subjective any more Quote:
true, we all do, or at least try to do that... ![]() but suites...sorry been there and done that... ![]() have a nice eve Inf.

FALSE FALSE I DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU!
F-secure have fastest responce on new viruses! You can check statistics from their web site! http://www.f-secure.com/news/respons...ponse_3q04.pdf They beat and KAV so there is no logic comparing with posts above. |

Hi,
"Is there any trustworthy comparative tests of antivirus programs...". Yes.There is an other one with F-Secure from the University of Hamburg (july 2004): http://agn-www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/vtc/en0407.htm Download the zip's file and you'll may have an aswer to your question. Post Scriptum about AVs: Many best ones, NO best one. Regards

sorry liang_mike, there is one file named prodsett.ini and you'll have to edit it. locate FSAVINST.DLL section and you will find the following lines depending on what OS you
are running. InstallService_F-SecureAVP=1 InstallService_F-SecureF-PROT=1 InstallService_F-SecureOrion=1 Install9xPlugIn_AVP=1 Install9xPlugIn_F-PROT=1 Install9xPlugIn_Orion=1 Just change this 1 to 0 and the corresponding engine won't be installed.
