Default antivirus wont update

I had AVG running on an old ME box and tried to update it today and it timed out. I thought no problem I have been wanting to try F-Prot anyway so I downloaded the trial version and to my amazement when I tried to update it timed out to. I had a splash screen that said check your internet connection and firewall I have the fire wall turned off and the ME box is running off a router. TDS updates fine and so does Bo Clean. I have F-Prot configured to update on the internet. the only other option is LAN. Does anyone have any ideas?

I figured it out. For some strange reason the firewall needs to be on for the update function to work.
