Default Virus? Upgradenow

Hey all,
I'm hoping someone would be able to give me a hand.

I'm not sure if it is a virus i have or some serious adware but my computer is really playing up and i couldn't post in the adaware section.

I have Windows Xp home and of late have been getting windows messenger popups saying stuff about a website entitled www .upgradenow.org. My computer starts fine and only stats playing up once i connect to the interent (im on dial up). After about ten minutes i get the pop up and then my computer and internet freezes, im not able to do anything and cntrl alt delete wont even bring up the task manager, all i can do is turn it off at the power.
I had updated spybot, adaware and my anti virus AVG7 beforehand and they have had no luck finding anything. My hijack this log looks normal to me.

Other than that im not able to connect to the net long enough to use an online virus checker like trendmicro and am curently on a friends mac.
Im hoping someone could please help me or point me in the right direction. Kind reagrds.

Hi illusionzzz, welcome to Wilders.

I would suggest following the comprehensive steps found in General Cleaning.

If these steps do not resolve your situation, you will need to download and run “Hijack This” found here and post your log at one of the forums found at A-SAP. The two bigger forums for HijackThis log processing, (meaning they process more log threads each day than most others) are: SpywareInfo.com and CastleCops.com. Be sure to read their posting policy in the links at their log review forum sections prior to posting.

Once your system is clean I would suggest that you take a look here: Why did I get infected in the first place? Also, for further information on security and how to make your system that much stronger, see here, as well there are discussions here and even more here.

Hope this helps...

Let us know how you go.

Cheers

Use the program in this link to disable the Windows Messenger service:
http://www.grc.com/files/shootthemessenger.exe

Read this link, it contains good information about the Windows Messenger popups: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;330904

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, turn off the Messenger service.
To do this, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel (or point to Settings, and then click Control Panel).
2.Double-click Administrative Tools.
3.Double-click Services.
4.Double-click Messenger.
5.In the Startup type list, click Disabled.
6.Click Stop, and then click OK.
