Whats the point of such tool when McAfee Stinger and avast! Virus Cleaner do the same job better (they clean way more than just 10 worms/viruses)?

A critical update huh. Is it going to be ok have this Microsoft removal tool installed on your computer running along side your antivirus software? Are they going to conflict with each other?

Well we might all joke about it but the number of unprotected users out there and those "pests" that M$ have targetted do comprise a very high proportion of the active infections we see in HJT logs on different forums

I am sometimes extremely suprised to see a HJT log with a well known antivirus listed as running and Agobot or sasser or MSblast showing as running

Then when looked at deeply it turns out that either the antivirus has been disabled by the worm or has never been updated since it was installed whenn the computer came from the shop

We need to realise that in the real world out there probably 50% of computers have no proper antivirus protection and M$ are at least doing something to fight the worse offenders

28 December 2004: Security software company Prevx announced the top ten most costly Internet attacks of 2004. These top ten threats caused in the region of £9 bn worth of damage to businesses and home PC users in total in this year alone. Every threat in this years top ten is a worm, that either directly infects PC’s through their Internet connection, or is spread automatically by e-mailing itself to every e-mail contact on the user’s PC. This clearly demonstrates that these fast propagating attacks cause the most damage

    1. Mydoom - $ 4- 5 Billion worldwide(9.9 Million people affected)
    2. Netsky B - $ 3- 4 Billion WorldWide(3 Million people affected)
    3. Bugbear - $ 3.9 Billion
    4. Blaster - $ 1.1 Billion
    5. So.big - $ 1 Billion
    6. Sasser - $ 979 million
    7. Bagle - $ 550 - 600 Million
    8. Sober - $ 10 Million
    9. Klez - $ 1 Million
10.Zafi.B - $ figure unavailable at the time but 351,000 people hit.

maybe it will go some way in curbing some of this . As
dvk01 says , many pc users just dont take any precautions.

I'm sure they didn't damage the business of the computer security industry though.

Anything that is done to help people "free of charge" to combat viri has to be good. The less activity - the faster the internet will become for everyone.

The Alwil, AVG, HBDEVs & Bitdefenders of this world are to be applauded for that too.
