i have spywareguard installed on two other computers with no problem. installed it on my NEW laptop last night, got the error message:
"Error reading Spyware guard definitions. The file may be corrupt, or another program may have tampered with them.

Run live update .............. This message will appear when you try to run covered filetypes ............ unless you disable protection."
i tried to run live update, get the same message. this message pops up on my screen if i try to open norton or ad-aware se. i went to the javacool site, can't find the fix. i am desperate. can't uninstall the file, just get the same pop up when i try. tried to do system restore, it won't let me do that either. if i go to control panel and try to open anything i get the same popup.
i tried reinstalling it, no luck, same message. please help. thanks, maria

Who is giving you this error message - is it Norton or is it SWG?

If it is Norton, try disabling 'Auto-Protect' and re-install SWG.

    Marialoman,
my username is john-anthony. I am experiencing the same problems as you did when you posted your letter of Dec. 30, 2004.
So far, the only way that I have been able to circumvent the error message, when trying to get additional information from this application, is by going to My Documents> Folders> Spyware Guard. A folder opens with four of this application's files inside. When I clicked one of them, I got a message from Microsoft not to open it. So I didn't -at least until I'm reasonably confident that opening this file will enable me to resolve the problems I have
    been having with this download..
If you have resolved your Spyware Guard problem, I would greatly appreciate you sending me a message explaining your solution. If you haven't, I would like to
know. I will send a message to you explaining how I did,
    hopefully,resolve this headache.

this is my second post about our exactly similar
problem. Unlike the first, however, this one contains a solution. For a longer explanation, having also websites for downloading Spyware Guard's latest definitions, go to:
    www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=20406&
    highlight=spyware+guard+control+panel
    I did the following:
1)Downloaded the four Spyware Guard latest definition
    files from the above websites.
2)I downloaded these SG definitions to My Documents,
where I didn't have any SG files that would be a
posible source of confusion. I created a new folder,
put the files inside, and sent the folder to the desktop.
    3)Click Start> My Computer> C> Program Files> Spy-
ware Guard. Click the SG folder to open it. Then drag
the old folders from the SG file that are identical with
the new ones downloaded. I made a copy of each of
the four old files, and sent them to the desktop. i did
this for safety reasons only, i.e., in case anything
    went wrong. Nothing did.
4)Replace the old files with the new ones downloaded.
Interestingly, the SG folder in Program Files only
contained 3, not 4 of the files downloaded.
Now my PC is working fine. No more SG popups that had
blocked my access to Add and Uninstall Programs, System
Restore, use of various programs of mine, etc. All of my
    Taskbar Tray icons now appear
The old SG folder in Program Files seems to have had a
missing file. With the latest definitions in my SG folder, in
Program Files, I can get live updates.
