There is now a firm belief that organized crime, including the Russian mafia, is behind much of this activity. The scene is no longer dominated by kids out for fun.

Ahhh great.. PCMag is lumping in backdoors with spyware.. I don't think that's going to help much.

PCMag is a pest on itself.

A pest is writing about another pest, isn't life beautiful?

PCMag uses for example the "RedSheriff" server-side spyware system.
This is now apparently in use by many, many major sites and ISPs to send user Web browsing activity information back to a third party without the knowledge of the user.
This software reportedly exists as a Java applet and is loaded to users by participating customers of the tracking system.

From CertiGuide.com:

Yet it gets worse: if you go to the web site for the magazine (PCMag) and you have defenses in place you see that this very publisher is involved in tracking cookies and web tracking software.
While PC Magazine complains about spyware, its own website attempts to silently install MediaPlex, a tracking cookie. In addition RedSheriff is also running at the publisher’s web site.

Smokey
