For me, O&O Defrag and PerfectDisk are the best available defrag, so I think that you should run the available trial version of both and see what is the best for your system...

I used Diskeeper and PerfectDisk before. They are all quite good. I am now using O&O Defrag, which is quite good too. To me, O&O Defrag is very easy on resources and very quick on defragging. I like it so far.

I haven't seen any remarks here about a defrag program called mstDefrag. It appears to have a small footprint, ability to work in the background without any performance slowdowns and surprisingly fast at defragmenting plus more.

I use Diskeeper 9.0 with my Windows XP system (Pentium 4 2.8Ghz). I'm sold on the "Set It and Forget It" function where Diskeeper runs in the background as needed to maintain a defragmented system. Once in a while I run a manual analysis to see how well it's keeping the system defrag'd and find that there's never a need to run a manual defrag session. To tell you the truth, I rarely remember that I even have Diskeeper until I get some advertisement from Executive Software that there's an update. I highly recommend it :)

  8. Diskkeeper takes hours to do what PerfectDisk does in minutes, at least that the way things are on my box.

Just to let you guys know, O&O will be releasing a new version of their defragmentation program next week, it will be version 8. Got the word from their sales dept. today.

I have both PD 7 as well as the latest DK 9.054, PD does a thorough job but the latest DK is amazingly faster and does almost the same level of defragmenting from the seat of the pants testing angle. Programs open as fast with DK9 volume as with PD7.

I have been using the trial version of PerfectDisk and it was very stable and made a noticeable difference in performance but I found it to be pretty slow. I understand that Diskeeper is faster but after working through install issues it seemed to be very unstable and caused several BSOD's on my PC.

I am now trying O&O Defragger V8. Any comments on O&O V6.5 or V8 would be appreciated.

Folks, it's Diskeeper (DK) for sure!!! All the other "features" like smart placement, etc of other defragers look good at first but in reality are nonsense. Windows' builtin defrag for years has been a limited feature version of DK. Few choices in IT are as clear cut as this.....

I got tired in answer this question. Perfect Disk if you are normal user. O&O for Server.

For Auto Defrag uses MSt defrag as mention above. Been using it since Pre Beta stage with no problem.

I use Contig program from Sysinternals for regular single-file and recursive-directory defragmentation (of separate programs, then I separately defrag data directories, etc.), and also I have beeing using Buzzsaw, the "on-the-fly" defragmentation program, which runs on IDLE priority and defragments only after disk is being more than 95 % idle for one minute. But for "overall" defragmenting, I use Dirms from the same site as Buzzsaw, which also moves file toward the beginning of the disk (optionally by modification date), compacts files etc.

But for defragmenting registry hives and page-file, I got used to first run Ntregopt program to optimize the registry structure (optionally also see my home page, the events.html page, the event on 14.3.2005), and later on next boot Pagedefrag program (also from Sysinternals), to defragment this newly structured registry. Btw., all the program listed here are FREEWARE (some even Open Source) !!

P.S., But lately, I am not running "on-the-fly" defragger anymore - for reasons why, see the Theoretical question about disk fragmentation (future writes) thread that I opened on ArsTechnica forum (my nick is shirker)

    cheers all, stalker

ive used both diskeeper and perfectdisk. for me, diskeeper is faster but perfectdisk is better at defragging large files like temporary p2p files.

Diskeeper. I like the option "Set It and Forget It".
In general, I like software that works for me and doesn't need my attention or doesn't bother me regularly or occasionally.
I don't have any experience with other defragmenters, except the one that comes with Windows and the Windows Defragmenter is a dinosaurus compared with Diskeeper.
Aren't we all replacing MS tools by better tools ? I can give you enough examples, starting with MSIE.

If I was Microsoft, I wouldn't be so arrogant and I would study all the competitive softwares on the market and combine all their good ideas in Microsoft software.
That's how you beat the competition and become popular amongst users.
