Default What am I doing wrong?

I am the proud owner of Port Explorer 1250 and just installed it. I am unable to surf the net or download any files. I cannot get my Email either. I can connect to my Dial Up ISP but that is all, I can't get any further than that. I am running Windows XP. Also installed are NOD32, TDS-3. McAfee Firewall, Trojan Trap, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. IE and OE are comming up with errors and closing down or IE will say it cannot find server.

Immeadiately after uninstalling Port Explorer, everything is back to normal with full Internet access and email.

I have a dual boot system with XP Pro and Home (two installs of Port Explorer) and this has occurred in both operating systems. It is as if Port Explorer is blocking access to all ports and not allowing anything to access them.

I am at a loss as to what to do. The faults only first happened after installation and disappear after uninstalling.

I have run similar programs like this before (Aports.exe) with no problems.

Hi linney, it could be your firewall. Could you try uninstalling both Port Explorer and your firewall, then reinstalling Port Explorer, THEN your firewall in that order. See if that fixes your problem. Some firewalls are "mean" to Port Explorer and its actually your firewall stopping the network access because it's not acting nice on the LSP chain. Try what I said and tell me the results

What are the known firewalls that exhibit this problem?

Thanks for the information. I did re-install the firewall and Port Explorer and it did give me internet access again.

I will probably have to do the same with Trojan Trap as that is still causing errors in IE and OE, but only while Port Explorer is installed, as soon as I uninstall Port Explorer the errors disappear. I will play with that later today and let you know the result.

controler - it was conflicting with SPF on my Win98se but Jason pointed out that it was probably because i had the older version of SPF (ver 4, build 872) and if i upgraded to SPF 5 i shouldn't see any conflicts. i uninstalled the SPF i had and installed SPF 5, build 1150 and i haven't had any problems with the firewall conflicting with PE since.....i think the order in what is installed first may also make a difference since i didn't uninstall PE, i just installed the newer version of the firewall).

No luck with Trojan Trap despite uninstalling and re-installing. I've been down this track before with NOD32 and Trojan Trap, if I remember correctly the conflict was corrected by a complete reformat and re-install of XP. I'll do that one day no doubt.

In the meantime if any one else is running Trojan Trap version 3 with Port Explorer I'd like to know.

Snap,

Just to confirm what you saw (and Jason correctly identified), SPF4 had conflicts with *several* other apps due to the incorrect LSP usage of SPF. It was pretty nasty. I'm glad to hear they have it sorted with v5.

Hi Phil - just to confirm as you requested, Jason was right about the conflict with SPF being an older version as i wasn't having any conflicts with SPF-4 prior to installing PE, and i did have SPF-5 on the XP-Home before installing PE on that system with no conflicts between PE & SPF-5, so upgrading the firewall was the way to go, and it worked!

When i installed PE on the Win98se, SPF-4 immediately blocked all incoming so i wasn't able to connect to the net. After doing a clean uninstall of SPF-4 and installing SPF-5 i have had no conflicts on that system since, that i am aware of yet anyways.

linney - i don't have Trojan Trap so i am not sure if version 3 is the most current....if it isn't, would upgrading be possible?

Pretty sure version 3 of Trojan Trap is the latest version.
