F-Prot doesn't have email protection, otherwise I might give it a shot. I mean, am I missing something? I thought there were a few viruses that could infect you if you just previewed the msg, even if you didn't open an attachment.

I would think email protection is just a necessity nowadays. o_O

There are several AV;s that don't technically have e-mail scanning. But they will detect an infection if any attempt is made to open the mail. This actually works pretty well because the av's that do have mail scanning usually ony scan one mail client such as OE. F-prot is an excellent antivirus, actually it is one of the best. very light on resource use and scans very fast. Good detection rates.

F-Prot's RealTime Protector scans e-mail attachments when they are accessed.

What about something like Bubbleboy (from Symantec):

VBS.BubbleBoy is a worm that works under Windows 98 and Windows 2000. The worm will also work under Windows 95 only if the Windows Scripting Host is installed. The worm will only work with the English and Spanish versions of the operating systems, and not with Windows NT.
Microsoft Outlook (or Express) with Internet Explorer 5 must be used in order for the worm to propagate.

The worm utilizes a known security hole in Microsoft Outlook/IE5 to insert a script file, UPDATE.HTA, when the e-mail is viewed. It is not necessary to detach and run an attachment.

Yes, I know that was IE 5, a long time ago, but what if there's something similar for IE 6?

If there is anyway possible, do not use Outlook in any form. If you must use it, configure it for safety and not convenience.

That is a very good visual effect wish I would of had it :D ;)

And I don't believe that is a problem with IE6 with all of the patches installed. anyone useing IE5 really should update for security reasons.

Okay, okay, maybe a bit rash. Configured properly and used with a good antivirus program, it's probably okay.

(Not on my computer though) :D

No, it was just an example. It's just a matter of time before something like that occurs for IE6 (or 7). And not just Outlook, but OE.

I turn off the preview pane, but still ...

Anyway, in that case F-Prot would leave you defenseless, right?

if the viri get that vicious in e-mail even a mail scanner probably won't do much good either. You just can not defend against everything that is out there all we can do is our best and hope it is enough.

Command Antivirus, which uses the F-Prot engine, mentions bubbleboy. F-Prot should be able to handle it.

If you look though F-Prot's detected viruses list you'll find:

    VBS/BubbleBoy.A
    VBS/BubbleBoy.B

Heres how to create the F-Prot detected viruses list:
    http://www.f-prot.com/support/windows/fpwin_faq/21.html

So it is detected! Woohoo! :)

To view the list of detected viri in command you just have to click on virus information. I would have thought that f-prot would have had something like it. since they share a scan engine.

Hmmm ... I installed the trial. It looks like when you've got the RT scanner running, and nothing else, you've only got FPAVUPDM.EXE, F-Sched.EXE and F-StopW.EXE running. Total of 8848 KB? That's it? Am I missing something?

I use NOD realtime and F-Prot on demand. I have used F-Prot as a realtime scanner in the past.
F-Prot is supposed to be coming out with a new version this year. It will give you options for the realtime scanner.
Support is a big factor and F-Prot has some of the best.

Yes, I am happy with F-Prot.

Yep, I use F-prot realtime and BitDefender on-demand. F-prot simply gets the job done with none of the overhead. Their support is, imo, the best in the industry too! Version 4 is suppose to be a vast improvment over 3.x, if they don't hurry im gonna wet myself. :p j/k
