Question Wot Else May I Need Or Consider Gettin'??

Hi Evry1!!,

Now i'm a person who likes there freeware programs, an' I could be considered a freebie freak!! but I don't care....hehehe!!
I'm postin' here, b'coz I have a question, as the title says 'Wot Else Will I Need Or Consider Gettin'??' OK, here's the scoop, I already have some security/privacy programs on my comp (which I Luv), but I'm postin' here to ask u guys if definately need, or need to consider gettin' anythin' else to prevent/secure/protect etc... (As Long As There Freeware Programs)....I'm all ready usin' the followin' programs (All Of Which Are Up-To Date):

AVG FREE Edition
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3
Ad-Aware SE Free Edition
SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard and...
EMS Free Surfer mk II (Pop-Up Blocker)

I've Already read about the program PG (Process Guard), that sounds good, but I wanted to post here, an' read about wot u recommended, before I make any discussions....

Apologised if i've posted in the wrong place....
Any response iz, as always, greatly appreciated....cheers

Thanks (Regards),

If you don't mind spending a little cash you should consider Tds3 info here it is a really good antitrojan program, probably the best imo. you can download a trial version if you like.

with the programs you have listed and the ones we mentioned you are on your way to being pretty secure. I also want to mention that to really enhance your security you should consider useing an alternative browser such as Opera 7.54 or firefox 0.93 much more secure than Internet explorer.

doesn't RegistryProt do the same thing as Spybot's TeaTimer (but monitorin' registry changes), or all I mistaken with that theory??

Please reply back....thanks

Good list. Here's a few thoughts....

You might add the free ewido to your toolkit. It is now downloading with a "suite" that will cost after 60 days or so. But, after the trial, the software just defaults to regular ewido. Excellent program.

The AVg antivirus program is fine. In fact, I use it exclusively. You will hear all kinds of varying opinions on this, but AVG's paid version for enterprise is excellent and well thought of. The free version is given away simply as an introduction to their enterprise services and is updated regularly, the same as their paid products. It doesn't get the recognition it deserves because it is free in a very competitive consumer marketplace for AV programs.

Naturally, at Wilders, (who hosts their forums), you will read lots of positive reviews about Australia's DiamondCS products. Some of their products are indeed very good. It's interesting because here in the USA anyway, they are not very well-known and are not on too many radar screens. Wilders is their "base" and to be honest, Process Guard (especially), and maybe TDS3, deserve wider recognition. But, don't feel that you must own all of their products to be "secure"...........I like them and think they do good work, but some here have their entire inventory of products and encourage people to do the same. That's okay as long as you don't feel as if you truly need them all. I don't mean to offend any of their users here - I am just trying to be honest. With that said, I truly believe the DiamondCS products mentioned above deserve more publicity, marketing, and respect here in the United States. On top of that - they're good people.

Javacool's products are top-notch free utilities and I would add SpywareGuard and MRU Blaster to your list.

I am trying a new beta version (4.53) of Ad Muncher and am extremely impressed. It seamlessly removes every kind of pop-up, text ad, floaters, you name it. Plus, it has an easy-to-use anonymous proxy as a bonus that can be turned on and off at will. It doesn't get any easier than Ad Muncher and it does much more than "munch" ads. It is truly a solid security tool. It's $25 after trial, but from what I've seen so far, it's worth every dime and is a new addition to my own must-have list.

I noticed you don't have a secure Password Manager/Form Filler. I use Roboform Pro which I couldn't surf without anymore. Strong encryption of all your information in the Pro version. Lesser DES encryption in the free version. For a simple manager of passwords, take a look at the free KeePass Password Manager. It's an open-source project and is very a nice piece of software.

That's just a few thought. By the way, Welcome To Wilders, LJM Master. Stick around and you will learn a lot from many knowledgeable people here that are all - you will find - very willing to help. This is a great place loaded with friendly, helpful people from all over the world.

This is what is set up on my system and they all play together nicely:

1. Nod32 Beta – Anti-virus.
http://www.nod32.com.au

2. Zone Alarm (free) – Firewall with visual outgoing alerts.
http://www.zonelabs.com

3. Spyware Blaster (free) – Spyware Prevention.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com

4. Spyware Guard (free) – Real time scanner for Browser Hijack prevention.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com

5. Spybot Search and Destroy (free) – Spyware removal and protection, with registry monitor. If running the above 2 programs, your system should remain fairly clean.
http://beam.to/spybotsd

6. Adaware (free) – Spyware removal. What Spybot Search and Destroy doesn’t pick up, this will.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

7. Script Defender (free) – Script protection.
http://www.analogx.com/contents/dow...tem/sdefend.htm

8. System Safety Monitor (free) – Registry change monitoring.
http://maxcomputing.narod.ru

9. File Checker (free) – Monitors important ".exe" files of various programs.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com

10. Mozilla Firefox (free) – Safer Web Browser - try some of the exploit tests in the "Polls" section here at http://www.wilderssecurity.com/index.php it's scary stuff, enough to have most sensible people start looking for better solutions. The programs I listed should be enough to thwart these current exploits.
http://www.mozilla.org

11. Proxomitron (free) – Proxy. This allows a program (local or remote) to sit between your web browser and the Internet at large, to monitor everything and change it if you want to.
http://www.sankey.ws/proxomitron.html

12. Kye-U's filters (free) – Rule Sets for Proxomitron giving greater protection against exploits.
http://www.kye-u.com/proxo/forums/i...topic=131&st=0#

13. Ewido (free) – Anti-trojan. I do NOT use the active file scanner, it slows my system down to much.
http://www.ewido.net/en/

14. Mozilla Thunderbird (free) – For email. I don't use it because I only have Hotmail.
http://www.mozilla.org

15. Mail Washer (free) – Spam email filtering. Again I don’t use it myself, as I have Hotmail.
http://www.mailwasher.net/

16. FirstDefense – ISR – Total System backup. Use this when you have first installed a fresh copy of windows and all your stable programs, do this BEFORE you have transferred your data onto the system.
http://www.raxco.com/products/fdisr/

17. Netgear ProSafe Firewall - Hardware firewall.
http://www.netgear.com.au

The above will give you a very tight system. Ultimately it comes down to safe practices, and it is always best to practice and think of safety, otherwise it will remind you and it won’t hold back in doing so... it's a bit like gravity, very unforgiving...

Hope this helps...

Cheers

That's a good list, Blackspear. It made me realize that in my post I failed to mention ZoneAlarm. I am still sold on the pre-5.0 versions (3.7 and up).

I also agree with you on not using the active scanner in ewido. It slowed me way down as well.

Yes, I've gone back to pre 5.1.011, it was running ok on one machine, then yesterday it locked that one up as well, returned to 4.5.594 and things are back to normal

There are no small topics, all are relevant to the person posting, as well to those reading the posts, it is where we all learn... Never be afraid to ask a question, it is better to ask than not to, or you could find yourself siting in the dark, when there is a light switch on a wall nearby

Cheers
