What do you guys recommend for a hard drive cleaner?

Cleaning junk files, internet traces you get the point?

I use Acronis Privacy eraser and it's leaves behind passwords and doesn't clean logs of I.E and Opera.

I'm sure they are, Ritaann, but Crap Cleaner looks like it provides a simple deletion, which means the erased data is easily recoverable. CleanDiskSecurity provides for simple deletion, DoD deletion (7 wipes) or Gutmann wipe (35 wipes), with the last being proof against most, if not all, forensic recovery methods ... at least so far as I've been able to find out. Ultra WinCleaner I know nothing about.

If all someone is looking for is a simple deletion, there are several freebies available at both SnapFiles (formerly WebAttack) and Simtel.

I can't say much in favor of the interface (judging by the screenshots), and they also don't say how many times the deleted data is overwritten. If it's only once, it's probably recoverable. (But, no, I haven't tried it: this is the first mention of it I've seen.)

i tried it once, before reinstalling os, so i was trying things out, and i think it lets you decide how many times to over-write. also, i found it on an obscure part of internet, did a search and, does Pilli have a site?, because i think its on there.

this isnt a recomendation, it seems most use eraser instead of this, so that must mean something.

I've used many "cleaners." The one that I have found to be most effective is PurgeIE Pro. Has secure delete function (up to 99 passes), supports plugins (or you can create your own) and effectively repairs currupted IE cache and history files/folders. Deletes the IE index.dat cache file in accordance with Microsoft's approved method of proper cache deletion. In a nutshell, highly configurable.

Eraser from Sami Tolvanen/Garret Trant is the tool of choice for freespace and file cleaning. It doesn't get any better. It takes quite a bit of configuration to clean MRU, TIF, etc. In fact, so much so that I keep Eraser strictly for disk and single file/folder wiping and use Tracks Eraser Pro (The 'pro' version is what you want) for the duties I am thinking you want. It erases traces of Internet usage, Index.dat, etc. Clean Disk Security is a good program as well, but lacks some of the features and thoroughness of Tracks Eraser Pro. The Plug-In maker alone with TEP is worth the price of admission.

CleanMOCache is nice although, it requires the installation of .NET Framework. I made a plugin for PurgeIE Pro that secure deletes Firefox's cache.

I have found the combination of 3S (System Security suite) along with Eraser to be a great combination, and both are free. What more could anyone ask?

I've got a question for participents in this thd.

How does eraser compare to wipe.exe? They both overwrite the drive (file/folder), correct? I'm a little short on my understanding between the two.

Currently, I am running Eric's (netfiles) "tiff-clean", with the wipe.exe file in place. Could someone please offer
some additional info on this for me, as I have not found any threads on it at the search bar. TIA.
