files and directories that we can delete to improve Windows

I want to know want kind of files and what directories of c:\windows\ should we can delete to remove the junk in our computer and improve the speed of Windows?

Do you know some website that have all this information?

Directories:

I'd say the followings are safe to delete:

*.---
*.*
*.bak
*.bmp
*.chk
*.log...Use in W2K...clear data in log file only
*.old
*.prv
*.tmp...Use in W2K
*.wbk
~$*.doc

That said, removing these items will reduce the size of your HD, but shouldn't improve the speed of windows. A corrupt registry is usually the root cause of most speed issues (assuming no virus and spyware in the HD). Use the free version of JV16 to clean up the registry. You can also manually scrub the registry if you are competent in this department.

Always image the OS or create a back up of the registry prior to working with the registry file.

dear VaMPiRiC_CRoW, its a long list and i'm very lazy. still i'd like to point out that some Adobe plugins have this .SYD extension, .CHK is file recovered my scandisk, system.1ST has the registry settings when your installed your OS. this is sometimes usefull if you want to recover your registry. those .CPY files are used by system restore, .DMP files are memory dumps and sometimes important, .SWP is your swap file, anti-vir.dat and chklst.* sounds important. don't delete the dllcache folder.

I've change to this files, these are more safe to remove, and I never had problem with my first list...:

Why cannot delete the dllcache folder?

Need to disable windows file protection before removing all items in dll cache.

Click on Start, Run type in regedit (Or regedt32) & hit Enter.
Open the following registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon].
In the right hand pane, Modify/Add a New DWORD Value Right click entitled SFCDisable.
Enter a value of ffffff9d (Hexadecimal) to disable WFP.
Reboot for the changes to take effect.

I can delete the files

I'm only asking to the AMRX, why he don't recommend to delete the files in the "dllcache" folder...
