On June 12, on the first start-up of my computer, things went extremely badly after no problems the night before. The start-up items in the system tray were slow to start or didn't at all, NAV2002 or NIS2002 wouldn't start, IE wouldn't start, Ctrl-Alt-Del wouldn't work and the Services panel wouldn't start from the menu. In safe mode, things were less grim, but NAV auto-protect was disabled and couldn't start, and email scanning said "error." I thought this was classic worm behavior.
However, I am totally up to date with MS patches (I run XP Pro SP1), NAV was up-to-date, and I frequently run Ad-aware and Spybot S&D. I am also behind a Linksys router (I have DSL) besides the NIS2002 firewall. I don't IM, and while I have Blubster and Piolet, I haven't used them in months. In safe mode, I ran the online virus scanners from Symantec, Panda, RAV and TrendMicro, and they found nothing. I ran Ad-aware and Spybot, and they found nothing. I thought maybe NIS2002 was corrupted, so I removed that with the Symantec tool (you can't run add/remove programs in safe mode, and the NIS uninstaller wouldn't work in normal mode). No help. I found in normal mode that killing one of the svchost processes let the system tray items load, so I started randomly disabling some services, and it turns out that disabling Workstation (lanmanworkstation) resolved the symptoms. I installed TrendMicro Internet Security, and I scanned (in normal mode now) with that, Ad-Aware, Spybot and The Cleaner. Nothing was detected. I am afraid to restart the Workstation service, but I also am concerned that the worm/virus/etc is still lurking and I can't detect it. The HijackThis log follows. As far as I can tell, there's nothing untoward there. Any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks! Does the lack of replies mean than no one else can see any problems in the log? Any other suggestions?
Thanks, Duke |

Hi dukeofdevon,
Check the following items in HijackThis. Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked: O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file) O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 01] "C:\Program Files\SBC Yahoo!\Connection Manager\IP InSight\IPMon32.exe" O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://207.188.7.150/30d806057e34d35...zip/RdxIE2.cab Then reboot. Nothing very disturbing actually. Are there any other symptoms? Regards, Pieter

Hi Pieter, thanks for the help. Since I disabled the lanmanworkstation service, things seem to be fine, as far as I can tell. Do you think I should try turning it back on and seeing if things fall apart again? I guess I was wondering if there might be some hidden exploit of that service that isn't a known virus/worm/trojan yet.

I just bit the bullet, restarted the Workstation service and rebooted. Everything still appears to be normal. Maybe the problem really was something with NIS2002. Anyway, everything seems ok for the moment...
There is one other odd thing. In the setupapi.log, a bunch of multimedia drivers were being installed on the day the problems started. I don't know why, since there was no hardware change. The drivers were: Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller This last one seems to have had some problems installing. About 3.5 hours later, after some of my mucking around, the driver installed successfully. Hours after that, when I was finally back in normal mode, I see: Microsoft Kernel GS Wavetable Synthesizer Microsoft Kernel DLS Synthesizer Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer Microsoft Kernel DRM Audio Descrambler Five days later, I see: Microsoft Streaming Quality Manager Proxy Microsoft Streaming Clock Proxy Microsoft Streaming Tee/Sink-to-Sink Converter NABTS/FEC VBI Codec Microsoft Streaming Service Proxy Microsoft Streaming Tee/Sink-to-Sink Converter Closed Caption Decoder World Standard Teletext Codec Also, there is a yacs.log file generated at about the same time as the above things: I 19-165735.065000 c9c Winsock ver=101/202 desc=<WinSock 2.0> status=<Running> I 19-165735.095000 c9c Yahoo! Audio Conferencing System I 19-165735.095000 c9c Copyright 1999-2000 Yahoo! Inc. All rights reserved. I 19-165735.095000 c9c Library name=yacscom version=43 I 19-165737.178000 d04 Start shutdown I 19-165737.178000 d04 Shutdown/disconnect complete It seems like, for some reason possibly related to the Yahoo Audio Chat Service (which I have never used or intentionally installed), a bunch of drivers got reinstalled, and a problem with that installation might have caused what I thought was virus behavior. I'll write again if I actually find anything about this. dukeofdevon |
