Anyone heard of historykill?

Has any heard of a program called historykill? Or a program called WinPatrol?

Hi notageek.No I haven't heard of them.Do you have an URL(link)for them?I've checked a few programs out for cleaning internet history/tracks.I could look at the info. and compare them to what I have now and recent programs I've checked out.

WinPatrol is a small, simple program that monitors your system for worms, Trojans, spyware etc. I heard a few good words about it but never tried it myself!

Hi Notageek.I checked for info at the Historykill web-site.I have Supercleaner 2.43.So I compared the info on both programs.I notice that Historykill has a few features that Supercleaner doesn't currently have.Namely a stealth mode and a popup stopper included.southbaypc does have a separate free popup stopper(NoAds).Historykill claims to overwrite some files 21x.I would have to check,but I don't believe that Supercleaner does that.The other differences that I noticed are ;1)Price.Historykill is 39.95 while Supercleaner costs 29.95 2)Trial length.Historykill is 15 day trial.Supercleaner is 30 day trial. 3)License term.Historykill has free updates for a year.Supercleaner is supposed have upgrades at no charge.There is no 1 year license. 4)the only other thing I noticed with Historykill is;there was no listing of Opera Browser for compatability.Supercleaner has that. Otherwise they both claim compatability with most windows os.The only way to know for sure how good Historykill is would be to trial it and compare it with another similar program and decide what you like better.Historykill costs more,but it also claims to be more versatile.If you want to check what Supercleaner site has for info they are at http://southbaypc.com. It all depends on personal preference.

Thank you for the info testser. I have been using Eraser to clean my files. I was looking into getting something else to use but I don't have lot of time to look. I'm gonna look into superclean. Thanks for the link.

Yes, I have heard of HistoryKill. My job concerns working with privacy issues daily and I am involved with a lot of testing and keeping up with software that is privacy-oriented. Some things I think you need to know:

Wild claims. Their website used to (and it still does - I just checked) makes claims that simply are not true. Example: HistoryKill is the only program to erase the index.dat file. The only one! Right. There are other examples, but you get the idea.

HistoryKill's "wipes" are bizarre. How it can wipe 21 times (which it doesn't - another false claim) and still leave so much information behind when you run a recovery program is beyond me. So, I have some technical gripes. But, the main thing is this:

HistoryKill has a long history that is not all good or respected. Namely, it's "Evidence Eliminator" like affiliate program which is very generous and begs for abuse in the way of spamming, etc. Also...HistoryKill is closely linked with the porn industry. From what I hear from numerous people is that you cannot surf porn sites without numerous pop-ups for HistoryKill. Ironically, even if you did want to cover porn tracks, there are much better programs to do it. Again though, it's the reaching out to the porn industry to participate in their affiliate program that look so bad.

The link to porn is something that, in my opinion, destroys its credibility as a serious privacy tool. They clearly seem more interested in using scare tactics, affiliate programs, etc, than in computer privacy.

By the way, that "PC World" endorsement? It was yanked from underneath them and they sure don't brag about that! It was even removed from PC World's Download page.

These are just a few things to think about. There are other products that are much, much better.

Thanks for the info. I didn't even d/l it. It's funny you should talk about cleaning up porn tracks. my brother just bought a used computer and it has lots of porn tracks on it. I laughed a first but now he really wants to get rid of them and I told him to use eraser. Is that a good program for him to use?

Absolutely. If we're talking ERASER from Sami Tolvanen, it is an excellent program. In fact, if one had the patience, everything all of these "cleanup" programs do, Eraser can do if you take the time to configure it. That's what the "ERASER On-Demand" configuration program is all about. There's nothing difficult about it -- it just takes time. But to set it up and then run it at Gutmann -- it would be perfect.

Your brother needs to clean up all those temp internet files (which ERASER would do beautifully) and there's probably registry entries he would want to get rid of as well.

and it wouldn't hurt for him to download the fully-functional trial version and clean up some other things like index.dat, etc.

I think it's smart to actually erase that stuff too because you really don't know if they were legal porn sites or possibly illegal child porn sites that one SURELY wouldn't want traces of on their computer.

Yes its Eraser from Sami Tolvanen. I alos pointed out Spider to him for the index.dat files. Now as for the registry entries on there with the sites i'm not sure. Not even sure how he would find them or get rid of them.
