I have tried to block a program from accessing the Internet but been unsuccessful. We will call the program yyy.exe Here is what I tried. Under Applications Name: YYY.exe Version: 1.0 #of rules: 2 Mode: Deny Under Rules: Block: TCP (6) *(any):*(any) Deny H L Block_2: UDP (17) *(any):*(any) Deny H L I thought this would stop it from connecting at all. Some how it is still connecting and trying to download a later version which I do not want. ZoneAlarm does block the program alright but makes the computer very slow to the desktop. Probably a conflict with Avast or Malwarebytes Pro. Anyone know of a way to fix PFW. For now I will live with Zonealarm, now that some conflicts with certain browsers have been fixed. rrrh1 (arch1)
If I remember correctly, you may have to go into "advanced options" - "parents" and deny access to that program so that it cannot connect out via other programs. There is an excellent .pdf manual on the privacyware site which you can download which gives specific info on various settings.
Well I set it to filter and got a pop-up, I said block an it still connected to the Internet. I give up, ZoneAlarm It will be. rrrh1 (arch1)
Did you verify that the rule you created actually was created? Another thing about PF people do not realize is the firewall rules need a certain period of time to actually register in PF. So if you created a firewall rule and then immediately tested it, that rule might not be in effect yet. You should also wait 10 mins. or so before shutting down your PC after making any PF changes.
If the program is from a Trusted publisher, it won't be blocked unless you untrust the publisher, IIRC.
I think that needs addressing, If I get a notice via a pop-up and tell the program to block access it should NOT allow connection under any circumstances. I also used the settings from elsewhere on this forum. Can't seem to find it now. But It is set to manual, automatic is off. Trusted publisher is disabled. I am wondering if Avast Web shield could be the problem. rrrh1 (arch1)
If you tell it to block, it will block. It's just that the rule will take time to be applied and so you could be asked again. Maybe you are right about Avast's Web Shield, as it uses a 'proxy' approach, if I'm not mistaken.
Ensure to fully exclude from AVAST the ZA components, i.e. vsmon.exe, ZAPrivacyService.exe and zatray.exe. Ensure also that all AVAST and MBAM components are "Super" in the ZA application control "trust level" column.
Well, he seemed to ask for a way to get PFW to do what he wanted. You're right he talked about ZA too, so we're both on target I guess.
That's correct and that's why i don't use Avast with Privatefirewall. There is no workaround for the time being, except 1 thing...to turn off Avast's Web Shield, and i don't wanna do that.So i move on to another AV till Avast will resolve this issue.
The same happened when I had Avira installed. Whenever I turned off the web scanner, Private Firewall started to pop up alerts of some of my programs trying to connect to internet. When the web scanner was on, PFW was bypassed and there were no alerts . It doesn't happen with all the programs, only a few.
Thanks Some programs that are anti-malware related just don't get along well at all. I have had problems with Avast v8 more than any thing else lately. Did not have this problem with v7. Finally got Avast and Malwarebytes to quit snapping at each other. Have not been able to get Avast to work well with any 3rd party firewall all the time. Oh, for the day when programs only did one thing instead of being a suite. I have given up on PFW because of conflicts with Avast. rrrh1 (arch1)
