WMP Scripting Fix v1.0 released

Thanks to javacool:

WMP, by default, supports a dangerous feature that allows scripting to be embedded within media files. WMP will then execute the scripting when the media file is played.

The WMP Scripting Fix is a small application that disable Windows Media Player scripting simply, and easily, with the press of a button - scripting can also be re-enabled at a later date with this same program."

It adds or deletes the obscure registry entry mentioned in the first link above that will disable WMP scripting.

A quick little utility that will hopefully help more users secure their systems from this rather serious vulnerability that has STILL not been fixed by MS.

i installed this program, but when i went in to select cookies to delete after visiting sites on the internet i noticed that all of the icons had changed to the green anark client icon. deleted the fix and the icons reverted back to what they were before. weird.

What OS do you have?

The fix should not be affecting anything else but WMP scripting (which, itself, only affects Windows Media Player - or, I should say, *should* only affect Windows Media Player...the wonders of MS software...).

I'm using windows ME. I don't remember doing any other strange things prior to my going in to delete unwanted cookies. Guess I could try again.

I ran the fix again and am (at this time) unable to recreate the problem. I used GoBack yesterday to revert my drive after encountering the problem and deleting the program. I'll let you know if the situation recreates itself. Like I said, I could have caused it with something else. Just don't remember offhand what that could have been.

I installed the latest Service Pack with all the goodies for Windows ME, IE 6. Is there a need for this fix any longer with all of the WMP changes in the service pack.

Yes there is, unless you separately downloaded WMP Beta 9 (which has it enabled by default but has a control panel option where you can disable it in the program).

What link? Would like to check out reg key for install verification.

Which WMP functions are disabled by this?

Confusion stemmed from "first link above" reference.

Been there, done that. This is why I asked about the registry entry. Perhaps it is meant to be understood, but I see nothing there alluding to the registry.
