I'm pretty sure that this is the case with Win 8.

I'd love to know how many people who use Win 8 on a PC actually use the Metro UI and apps?

I have Win 8 on a new PC, but use it like I would Win 7. Metro is rarely seen on my end. Only use the PDF app and that's it. Everything for me is geared for Desktop.

Which makes me wonder why it is included on desktop PCs in the first place.

I want to say desperation, but that's too strong. My take on it (without really doing any research) is that they're leveraging Windows to try to gain market share in an area (mobile devices) that they've apparently already lost.

While doing this, they're also strong-arming the desktop customer (metro, apps) and software developers in the process, attempting to turn Windows into an iteration of Xbox, trying to funnel and control pc software sales through their own store where they get a cut ($) from each sale.

Like I said, other than occasional skimming of this or that article here and there, I haven't really researched it. So if I'm way off base here, then by all means someone correct me. That's my take on it, and it's also the reason that I find Win 8 (desktop) and it's UI and app store presentation a bit repulsive, and I suspect that I'm not alone.

I'd say you were definitely on base. I agree with your conclusion.

That's been my biggest complaint. It feels like soft tyranny and its coming from so many places besides MS.
