What application virtualization alternatives to Symantec Workspace Virtualization are worth looking into?

    Mentioned in the thread:

*1 Free version no longer (independently) developed.
*2 Free for open source developers.
    *3 No longer (independently) developed.

    Thank you for your suggestions.

    I have tried

    1. Cameyo
    2. Ceedo
    3. Enigma Virtual Box
    4. Evalaze
    5. P-Apps
I would have liked to try AppSense's StrataApp, but it doesn't install on Windows 8.

    Not satisfied so far.

Cameyo works pretty well, but it doesn't virtualize (some) background services out of the box. Its fast snapshots are nice, though.

Application Jukebox is another, more squared-away virtualization solution with a Studio component to capture applications and a Player component to stream the finished packages. See links in first post.

Pretty much like 'em all, spoon edges as a favourite lately but they are all vulnerable, back to hardware solution for me.

You have forgotten VMware ThinApp !

VMware ThinApp is the best software in his category (and perhaps the most costly).

My intention was to compile a list of software which might replace SWV and, because it is free for personal use, I originally excluded all software which is expensive. By now the list includes some of those too and, you are right, the rest might as well be mentioned:
    1. Microsoft App-V - $$$
    2. VMware ThinApp - $$$
    3. Citrix XenApp - $$$
    4. Citrix/RingCube vDesk*
    5. RingCube MojoPac*
    6. Dell/Quest Desktop Virtualization - $$$
    7. Installfree Bridge - $$$
    8. ZENWorks Application Virtualization - $$$
    9. UniDesk - $$$
    10. BoxedApp Packer - $$$
    * No longer (independently) developed, but the software may still be online.

    Non-Windows:
    1. RUNZ (Linux) - Free
    2. Moka5 (Apple) - $$$
I will add other software as I discover it.

When I have purchased VMware Workstation 8 at the fall of 2011, I have got a free licence for a special build of WMware Thin App (VMware ThinApp Starter Edition).
Comparing to the full version, The sole removed functions are only used in corporate environments (Active directory features).

I think it was a good opportunity to get this software because the price is astronomical :D

    Hi Cruise,

Yes, VMware ThinApp is an application virtualizer (and portable application creator). ;)

    Happy New Year!

    I've never tried VMware Thinapp myself,does it's feature-set in any way justify it's price-tag?

Not for private environments. On the level of functionality there is little which a free for play packager such as Cameyo can't do. The main difference of enterprise software, such as ThinApp, are features such as license compliance and benefits like extensive documentation and standard practices which are real assets for large IT departments.

    According to the description:

"User builds an application pack or downloads it from the pack database.
Z!Pack builder module provides user-friendly graphical user interface to build a portable application pack."

I've got a copy of this somewhere,I'll try to find it and see what exactly it does.

Thanks to genieautravail and MadMonkey for the info on ThinApp :thumb:
