New Yandex Web Browser

A new web browser from Russia - based on the Webkit engine (based on the open source Chromium browser) and developed by the Russian search engine giant Yandex will be available for download today:

I'm looking forward to trying it out!

It has the latest cloud based technologies and is secured by highly regarded Kaspersky Lab anti-virus engine.

sounds interesting...is the kaspersky component just their web site ratings or does it actually scan the pages for exploits?

It says this on the company's press release:

"The company's cloud-based safe browsing technology, together with Kaspersky Lab's security solution, enhances the browser's safety by warning the users about potentially malicious websites."

Yandex's safe browsing technology is like BitDefender's TrafficLight. It warns you what web sites to avoid entering. I think its combo rating technology like WOT and a scanning interface like TL so this could make for a very secure browsing experience online.

It went live!

Its an adaption of the Chromium browser with some unique features - such Yandex's smartbox search, autotranslation supported for 9 languages, pinning favorites in the browser favorites area and website scanning by Yandex while Kaspersky checks downloads for viruses.

I downloaded the Windows version but Intel Macs are also supported.

I tried it. There's absolutely nothing new here: no new features or functionalities introduced, with the exception of the file scanner from Kaspersky.

With all the security components being cloud based, might it mean that it data mines our privacy in the background with every file downloaded and every search made?

Did you look at Tableau? Its a widget that opens a dash of pinnable favorites. You can pin and unpin them. Kinda like pinning applications to the taskbar - but in this case you can pin them within the browser.

They removed setting the home page.

There's Google Chromium's Incognito mode if you're feeling really paranoid. Keep in mind the Russian language version of the browser is reflected in the Tableau sites visited but they can be removed with no problems. And since its still Google, all the Google extensions will work in Yandex.

Yes, that's a nice one; I missed that. But, other than that, it's not much different from the other alternatives/spin-offs (Chrome, Dragon, Iron, etc.).

Agreed. Google's success has led to many customized variations of its browser... too numerous to list them all - every variant of the open-source Chromium Browser project has led to something every market likes.

Hmmm.... Yandex has its own proprietary safe browsing technology that replaces the default Google one.

I don't understand why Kaspersky didn't detect malware when you made a download.

The browser's home page is hard coded to the Yandex search page in Russian and there's no way to remove the search engine. I set the Yandex English search portal as the default.

It helpfully offers to let you open Google and Bing to expand your search terms.

Nice and fast and hopefully there will be improvements coming in the future.

Looking forward to a Linux release. i'm interested to see how well the Kaspersky cloud technology works. Any one comment?
