used to be iTunes back when i had an iPhone. then switch to mediamonkey but the sound was laggy for me(it was an audio driver issue but still).
right now im back to WMP

I used Spider Player before it was discontinued. Now it's back to good old Winamp.

VLC for all audio except MIDI, which it doesn't support without a 3rd-party add-on (guess they feel it's an obsolete format, but I've got several hundred MIDs), and WMP for the latter.

winamp pro for audio (and synching with ipod)
Prefer VLC for video (win amp sometimes plays files at benny hill speed, so don't use it)

I generally use MediaMonkey because I like the gui and the library management, but Xion Player and XMPlay are two smaller players that I use on occasion and like. I have tried a lot of them over the years and imo these suit my needs the best at this time.
