GIMP 2.8 - Bloody amazing

I'm the fanboy, baba ba da bo! Here's a lovely jubbly review and image tour of GIMP 2.8, a free, cross-platform image manipulation program, featuring single-window mode, image tabs, layer groups, save vs export functionality, old plugins support, new file format support, Linux installation via PPA repository, cool screenshots, and more. the single window mode is my favorite new feature.
that feature really makes the GIMP a very good alternative to every other image editors out there.
including Photoshop.

I'm not familiar with Gimp. Is this a photo editing app? If it is, it looks like it might be a replacement for my Photoshop Elements.

Yes, it is a photo editing application.

GIMP is basically an alternative to Photoshop, but the similarities are just not there. That's not saying it's a bad program, in fact it's pretty darn good if you don't have the ability to purchase better. Photoshop Elements, imho, gives you more and, should you decide to splurge on Photoshop, you'll feel right at home.

i've used both Elements and the full blown Photoshop.

they are both excellent.
but in this economy, i can't justify of paying the upgrade prices of Elements every year or so.
i've been feeling the pinch and switching most of my paid apps to free ones.

Gimp has all the features i need.

Unless you do business with clients that absolutely needs to have original PSD and AI files then the GIMP and Inkscape can do the job very well.

yes, it can be done inside GIMP.
you're only limited by your skills and times.

i just started using the GIMP lately so i'm no expert.
i haven't tried the object removal thing inside GIMP so maybe others can chime in.

logos are best created inside vector graphic apps like A.I. or Inkscape.

To remove an object from an image, I use a combo of three tools

Select Clone Tool
Hit Ctrl to choose the area you want to clone
Then I paint over the area that needs to be removed

Then to spoof it up a bit I use the Heal Tool, Ctrl and then choose the area to fix.

Then I use the smudge tool to carefully blend the area I am working on.

Those are the steps I use, and it is fairly easy and quick.

I use to do this a lot in GIMP 2.6, haven't used 2.8 enough to know if it works the same way.

You can create some nice logos as well, Professional looking and with good results. But I use Serif DrawPlus X5 for making my logos.

GIMP 2.8 is really nice.

Regarding removing objects with GIMP. Besides what has already been listed, I also use Resynthesizer plugin - http://www.logarithmic.net/pfh/resynthesizer

Doing web logos GIMP does the trick, doing vector graphics to be scaled up to even billboard size, I tend to use Inkscape and GIMP.

Can this version of GIMP work with 16 bit files. For me thats a deal breaker if it can't. In the past I used both PS & GIMP and once I started doing 16 bit I had to let GIMP go. Would be nice to get it back into my work flow.

not at the moment, but it's coming eventually:

For some industries, especially photography, 24-bit colour depths (8 bits per channel) are a real barrier to entry. Once again, it's GEGL to the rescue. Work on integrating GEGL into GIMP began after 2.4 was released, and will span across several stable releases. This work will be completed in GIMP 3.0, which will have full support for high bit depths. If you need such support now and can't wait, cinepaint and krita support 16 bits per channel now.

I have installed v. 2.8 on Windows 7 x64 several times. In each case, the program has crashed when launched for the first time, sometimes also in the second launch. Afterwards, it works normally.

EDIT: When the program is launched for the first time, an empty window appears and it seems that the program has crashed. The program really crashes only if this empty window is closed. After waiting a bit, the program starts normally.

same here.
i think it needs to decompile on the first run.
works fine after that.
