Kubuntu 12.04 review - Precise what?

I've written a review of Kubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin 64-bit Long Term Support (LTS) edition with KDE desktop, covering live CD usage, installation in a quadruple-boot configuration and post-install use, including network connectivity - Wireless, Samba, basic look & feel, installation quirks like text overlap and keyboard selection, user home directory import, applications choice and integration with third-party software, webcam, multimedia - Flash and MP3 playback, Amarok localization and integration, Muon package manager and some issues, desktop effects, stability and crashes, suspend & resume, system resource usage, visual decorations, and more.

Thank you for the review. I have 12.04 installed and after a bit of fiddling am pleased to say that it is now very nice and stable. The only 'major' problem I had was with installing flashplayer updates. Never do this with muon as the install will fail because muon is looking for gksudo ! A bug of course. When that happens uninstall flashpluin-installer and:-
sudo rm /var/lib/update-notifier/user.d/data-downloads-failed
sudo rm /var/lib/update-notifier/user.d/data-downloads-failed-permanently
Then reinstall via terminal the adobe-flash-properties-kde which pulls in the adobe-flashplugin also from canonical partner repo.

Next is Xubuntu 12.04. all I can say is Wow, it's great - no crashes there at all. Unusually for me I attempted an upgrade rather than a clean install, and was thouroughly pleased with a perfect OS upgrade from 11.10. Immediately did a remastersys backup. 10/10

Although Muon has improved, I still prefer good ol' Synaptic. It's the first package I usually install.

i be never been kubuntu fan to be honest i like kubundu base kde more or

open suse and now days mandriva (ROSA 2012 ), mangea etc

chakra is another good kde but still its not for me

as far xubuntu yes awesome i wish mrk review xubuntu atleast LTS

its best OS when come to stability

I've experienced one or two bugs but certainly no show stoppers. Generally i'm really pleased with kubuntu. It's runs quite lean on my modest hardware especially after installing the low fat package.

However I cannot help myself but call a spade a spade. Let's admit it: Kubuntu is dead. And this comes as no surprise since it was in a coma for quite a long time/releases actually.

I've been using Kubuntu since version 5.10. 2-3 year ago you could find dozens of reviews near and after a new Kubuntu release. It was a big thing back then when new versions were released !! From alpha, beta, RC and final release a whole community was excited and writing about it.

Today ?!? Well, today if you can find one single review days after it was released, you are really lucky. Huuuuge drop in interest. Why ? Well I am looking at my Oneiric (11.10) version with latest KDE update from PPA. And then to my other desktop running 12.04. And boy !!! You would be hard pressed to tell which is which ...

I don't know about under the hood, but from outside hardly if any work seems to have been put into this allegedly new version. It doesn't feel in any way ... new and exciting. It's more like recent Firefox 13587 update ... Exactly as Mrkvonic said, it appears as they slapped the latest KDE from PPA onto the 11.10 and released it as being 12.04. And looking back to me it seems this trend existed since Maverick if not even earlier.

Heck, I had even the KMIx bug you mentioned on Oneiric + latest KDE since my last KDE upgrade a few weeks ago.

Canonical is only interested in tablets and smartphones because that's where they believe will have commercial success and growth. I guess that's their choice. Canonical have no longer interest in desktop arena. Ubuntu (on a desktop) is released so that it can be tested by community for free. Kubuntu was abandoned long time ago and it shows BIG TIME.

Yes, heard that they will pay 2 developers to apparently continue developing Kubuntu - but that will no longer be "Kubuntu" but something else (rumors have it to be off of Debian base). Good luck with that although I believe it's too little too late.

So for me the only options is to go back to Open SUSE which I used prior to Kubuntu 5.10. I have a feeling I won't miss Kubuntu much ...

So farewell Kubuntu ! Rest in peace ! It was nice while it lasted !
