Default Database update popup

it would be nice if the free version would have a popup saying there is a new database update to download manually.

I agree, but that would still require some kind of active auto-check mechanism, which is only in the paid version.

Check out the forums over at Avast, in the General Topics/Updates topic for many years now they've promptly announced each SB database update as soon as it's been discovered. Or, of course, manually check for updates every week or two ... they're small enough that even if you have to get 2 or 3 at once because of unusual circumstances, it's still quite quick.
