Default Ubuntu 12.04 graphic problems

folks,

first lemme quote one of my own post.
i've edited it for speed's sake.

Quote:

a few hours ago i decided to test Ubuntu with graphic intensive apps to see how it would fare.

i installed a game called Osmos which is available for Mac, Windows and Linux as well.

the game plays smooth in Windows but the frame rate is pretty bad in Ubuntu; i'd say maybe around 20-25 fps.

i tried with both recommended drivers for my NVIDIA card to see if it was gonna make a difference.
not really.
keep in mind this machine is almost 5 years old.

i decided to test another app: Stellarium.

in Windows, i get 60 fps.
in Ubuntu between 20-25 fps.
from here:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showp...4&postcount=70

----------------
i just re-installed Bodhi because i thought i remembered it being faster with those 2 apps.

i was not mistaken.
In Bodhi Linux, Osmos seems to be running as fast as the Windows version.
maybe a hair slower.

but with Stellarium, Bodhi totally smokes even Windows;
i get a framerate above 90 fps.

i am underwhelmed...

this is the line i edited out this morning because i thought it was too inflammatory:

how can a big team like Canonical can't get this right while a handful of college students can?

judging by the lack of response i should've leave it in there...

My excuse is that I don't know about games. Don't play them. I was tempted to suggest comparing code but thought better of it since that would be "rocket science"

can you be more specific about your card which card are you using ................etc

to be honest i am not into gaming or graphic expect but on Scientific linux i feel same with new drivers so i switch back to old one

you may also try changing your resolution and set accoding to best results

you may try one thing is that install old drivers from source and see also try to see your game without drivers in live cd

for what it's worth, it's a 4-5 years old NVIDIA PCI card with 256 megs of RAM.

but anyway, anyone can test this easily with the 2 apps i mentioned above.
compare your fps speed with Windows or other Linux distros.

However, not in all areas is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS doing well. When it comes to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on older x86 PC hardware, it's another step backwards. For hardware older than about a half-decade, Ubuntu 12.04 is becoming more sluggish to use, burning through greater power, and really not being worthwhile to pursue the upgrade. The Linux support for this older hardware has passed its prime.

Graphics issues like you describe, where things work better on older distros, could be a regression in Xorg or the kernel - probably Xorg if so, since Bodhi uses a current kernel.

Alternatively, you could try switching to Unity 2D to take some of the load off your graphics card...

Personally though I would recommend avoiding 3D games on Linux, period. Linux graphics have been an absolute mess for a long time, and gotten more messy since the introduction of kernel modesetting.

that's disappointing.

i would think improving this should be a top priority if Linux has ever any hope of becoming mainstream.

personally, i 'd like to do everything inside 1 OS and not having to switch just to play games or to use a program like Stellarium to see what planets and stars are visible in the night sky.

but that's me.

The hardware vendors (nVidia and ATI) are the ones who control the hardware. Their teams know how to make the best drivers. They only release proprietary drivers though and their main focus is Windows.

There are open source graphics drivers but they're lacking in a lot of areas since they have to support as many cards as possible without the developers necessarily having access to that hardware.
