SSD Recommendation

If you were going to purchase a 'durable' SSD drive today, what Manufacturer and Model Number would you go with? I do not need more than around 80 GB to 120 GB.

I did a sort by best rating at NewEgg and noticed that the highest rated SSD's typically have specified write rates much lower than specified read rates. Comments?

My main purpose of purchasing the SSD is to significantly reduce the PC boot time on a 5+ year old PC. Faster program open times is also a benefit that I would like to have.

What do you need SATA II or SATA III ? First off you more than likely have a SATA 2 system . Don't buy a SATA 2 SSD Go ahead and buy the SATA 3 SSD. When you move up to a newer system you will be ready. From my research the Intel SSD's are good and the Crucial M4 drives are good. Also the Samsung 830 is supposed to be good. These drives may not be the fastest but are generally regarded as dependable. The Intels are the most expensive and the Crucial the least.

i deal with SSD's daily (due to type of work) so i have some valuable knowledge to share (hopefully).

do not buy OCZ, yes they are wicked fast when they work properly but the amount of SSD's from OCZ that i have come across which have problems (like stuttering) is too great to ignore.

intel has always been a strong choice in my books as they just work, yes they have very low write speeds but the reliability is very good and the read speed (which is the main factor) is also very good. the later SATA 3 intel drives had a major problem but i think that has now been fixed with a BIOS update.

my strongest recommendation is for the crucial M4 drives, any varient of this drive is awesome, they are priced right, can hold their own with the fastest and the reliability is unbeatable.

like Mr Helix suggested, you cant go wrong with the mushkins either and i hear they have a very good RMA service should you need it.

so if you are looking for the most durable drive then the M4's are your best best.

the reason why write speeds are lower on higher rated SSD's is because the write does NOT matter in day to day usage. i would much rather have an SSD that has 50mb write and 400mb read than one which has 200mb write and 200mb read. the random 4k READ speed and the sequential READ speed is what matters. dont pay too much attention to write speeds.

I have a pair of the Mushkins as well. Can't go wrong with them, Intel, or Crucial. Avoid OCZ as stated. I don't have much of anything I ever bought from them that still works.

I must be one of the lucky ones. I've run a 128gb OCZ vertex 2 for my windows drive for the past year and its performed flawlessly, fast and reliable from my experience.

You're not the only one, same vertex here no problems.

However there are much better drives now: Crucial M4 is very popular and reliable (hourly bug is fixed)

its not the vertex 2 which had the widespread problem ,it was the vertex 3 (sata 3)

Well when I was looking for an SSD Vertex 3 was not even out then so the reviews I was looking at are the Vertex 2 which had horrible reviews at NewEgg http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...Z%20Technology

I think most ppl were having issues with the speed of Vertex 2 the 25nm ones and the fact that 25nm was degrading faster than the 34nm Vertex 2. I know for a fact mine is 25nm and is going strong for almost 2 years.

Hmmm i may have spoken too soon. Just fired up the pc this morning and it failed to boot. Checked my bios and my ssd is no longer being detected! Its just over the 12 month warranty too. Damn unreliable modern technology, i want to go back to the time when computer parts would actually last for a good period of time...

is that the OCZ one? its not the technology, i have multiple SSD's from multiple manufacturers and the only one that gives me headaches is the OCZ one. maybe people will take more notice about how rubbish OCZ is. unlucky mate

well i have an OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SATA III Sandforce Solid-State Drive (Up to 500MB/s Read
& 500MB/s Sequential Write - 60,000 IOPS)
and i have no complaint had it for over 18 months superfast and dependable in my custom laptop. i guess its luck of the draw maybe mine did not fall off the assembly line or the packers at the distribution plant did not drop the case when tossing it to load it into delivery truck.
