I updated Java tonight and IE 9 smartscreen filter asked me if I wanted to enable this. What is it and is it of any benefit or is it a detriment?

The SSV helper (ssv.dll) is a legitimate function of the Java Runtime Environment. It is unique to Internet Explorer, and is not essential. I'm not 100%, but I think it is a security precaution to prevent malicious web content from altering the Java Virtual Machine (a change which could, in turn, theoretically allow an unsecure/malicious Java applet or application to run). To fix it, you may need to uninstall and reinstall Java again. However, if you regularly/actively use anti-spyware tools, it should be safe to leave it disabled if desired.

The BHO, has a unique CLSID that I leave run under IE 8, however, your mileage may vary under IE 9.

You could enumerate your start-up list per screenshot. This would help you elsewhere.
