Will you upgrade to Windows 8? Why or why not?

Microsoft will be releasing Windows 8 in the coming months. Do you intend on upgrading to that OS and, if so, why? If not, why not. If there is some particular feature of Windows 8 that causes you to upgrade be sure and mention it.

Nope,Windows XP is still working just fine for me. When I decide to upgrade,I'll get Windows 7.

When I buy another computer, yes. Otherwise I'm sticking with Vista & Win 7.

I will upgrade only if there is no performance decrease and there remains a certain level of user choise.

When the new OS becomes slower than predecessors or begins to take control away from me, similar to how apple does it, then I am done upgrading.

I don't really care what the OS is TBH. I don't really care what it can do compared to old versions. I only care that it does what I need it to do and in the fashion I want it to.

Since Windows 7 has been running fine for me, with zero problems, I see no good reason at all to upgrade to 8 when it comes out. If I buy a new machine then it may have 8 on it but otherwise, no, I'll stick with what I've got.

Some like the new gui but I think Win 8 appears too touch-screenish looking to me. It just looks like a big Windows phone.

I'm already on the dev build.

It's more secure (SmartScreen, further ASLR support, further mitigations in the kernel) and uses ~ 250MB less RAM than 7 on startup.

Going back to the 7 UI is painful after using Aero.

Win 7 has Aero right? And IE9 has SmartScreen already. And who cares about a little ram when you have 4 gigs +?

Nope, have a new old rebuilt computer with XP pro. Hopefully, it will last several years. By then, I expect Win 9 or Windows 10 to be the latest and greatest.

IE9 has smartscreen, the entire Windows 8 system has smartscreen not to mention multiple other mitigation techniques.

Having more physical RAM really shouldn't mean you can excuse a boated OS.

And when the new file system comes out it'll use less HDD space and be faster, or at least that's the rumor.

And those of you on XP, you know it won't be supported in a year? As in... no more security updates or any other updates for that matter and most software will stop supporting it.

Yep, XP is pretty much over soon........ I am amazed at any hardware that actually lasts that long....

OK, but I wouldn't call 7 bloated. Vista was bloated. But I guess there's always room for improvement.....

There's always room for improvement. Whether hardware has advanced or not companies should always be encouraged to lower their resources.

I think it's something like 250MB less and we're not even in the beta, it may very well go further (there are some changes to services apparently.)

I always change OS with a new computer, this is why I'm still using Vista and XP. I think I'll get a new machine in 6 months therefore it will probably have Windows 8 on it.

Excuse my ignorance, but will Windows 8 be available for 32 bit systems? Or will it be for 64 bit only?

It will support both 32bit and 64bit as well as ARM.

Support for XP SP3 will continue until at least April 8, 2014. And it's likely that once that date rolls near and they realize how many people are still on it that they'll push it back.

The box I'm using now will suffice just fine until then. And I'm considering switching to Linux when that day does finally come.

There's no compelling reason for me to upgrade to 8, and 7 is serving me perfectly well, in three important facets: functionality, stability and security.

Windows XP works fine, would go back too Windows 2000 if it was a litte
more customizable, I still think it was the best operation system MS has
put out to date "but that isn't saying much"

and Windows XP will not just stop working when the so call end of life
comes, and as far as security goes that is what a clean image is for

They say the newer operation systems are more secure, well everytime
they bring out a new one it isn't long before it is hacked

I say it is more important to make sure your system is clean than
if it can be hacked "at the present time" because it will be hacked
sooner or later, it is just a matter of time

I plan to buy a new ligth notebook with APU, I just wait for 8 to be released. 8 without metro is noticable faster and smoother than 7, it even takes ~50MB RAM less than 7 (which takes ~350MB). The Developer Preview is out there to audition and while it's not even a beta, it does give you a feel for what Windows 8 is most likely to be.

I've run it and at this time see nothing it offers that I need, so I'll be staying with my current OS which is XP.

Probably. Will decide after Win8 RTM is available. But I plan to participate on the beta testing.
