same way as deleting the firewall files if i wanted to reset hips rules?? and what about the hips.xml file or should that one be left alone??

Sorry for the delay. Whether you are resetting the ESET Firewall or HIPS rules, we don't recommend deleting data files but recommend removing the rules themselves.
Press F5 to open Advanced setup. Expand Computer and then click HIPS. Click Configure rules, select the rules (for all of them, click the first rule, hold the Shift key and then click the last rule in the list) and then click Remove.

I just took a look, out of curiosity, to see what rules HIPS has and found none.
Filtering is set to "Automatic mode with rules". Is this normal? |

The rules in the location I mention are custom HIPS rules. If you have not created any, there will be none. I took the original question to mean user-rules, not ESET's default rules.
