Default Returnil(14) blocks 'Safely Remove Hardware'

When Returnil is installed and I want to remove the Sata HDD in the ultra-bay of my ThinkPad, no message appears
about it being safe to remove the drive and the system (XP) will hang on shutdown. The same holds true for HDDs
attached via USB. If Returnil is not installed, removing HDDs is not a problem. I beleive this is the same problem Robin A.
encountered here.

Error reproducible as follows:

Install Returnil
Reboot
No other activity
Select Safely remove drive w: (SATA 500 gig in ultra-bay which is swappable with other devices)
No confirmation message
Hang on reboot

Install Returnil
Reboot
Attach USB drive
No other activity
Select Safely remove drive f: (various sizes)
No confirmation message
Hang on reboot

Hi Al,
This is a known issue and is being investigated. For the time being, simply wait to disconnect your USB drives when the Virtualization is turned off.

In my case, that wouldn´t have solved the problem. The problem was independent of the virtualization being on or off. It seemed to depend simply on R14 being installed.

I installed REL14 3x already and I can't reproduce this on my machine.

the only problem I'm always experiencing is the anti-executable not working.

Hi Al and Konata,
Can you both PM me with your system hardware specs and OS version/build?

Thanks
Mike

Thank god i found this topic, i thought something really wrong has happened to my system. Today i am facing this weird problem. My external toshiba HDD is not fully ejected from the laptop and it hangs during shutdown. Even if i remove the usb my system still i can see the toshiba icon in my computer but when i try to open it it says location unavailable. And most annoying part is that untill reboot my system doesnot recognise any usb flash drive. Last night i installed returnil, its good to know the problem is known and people are working to solve the problem.

P.S: One last question, I only installed returnil, because i got a free licance in a giveway, if i uninstall returnil right now (till the problem solves) will i be able to use the licance again? i have the installer and licance saved in my pc.. And sorry for posting in another persons thread.

With regards
Gautam

Maybe yes, maybe no because its from the promotion. This means the available seats may be used up and you would not be able to get your seat reassigned. Send me a PM with your current Installation ID (preferences > Advanced tab) so I can peg your current client and license assignment on the server and then hold off on releasing that seat until you reinstall.

What I suggest (and this should work) is at that point to uninstall, connect the USB drive, and then reinstall RSS. Your drive should be recognized at that point and then keep it connected when the system is on (connect just before you power up the laptop). This is inconvenient, I know, but it should serve as a work-around until REL15 is released.

I'm having this problem too since I reinstalled my OS (W7 x64) on a new disk (Intel SSD). The problem arises when RSS 2011 is installed whether virtualisation is on or off. Only other antimalware installed is Bluepoint and PrevX with UAC off. All Intel hardware. Hope this helps.

The best way to handle this is to turn off the machine and then connect the drive and let Windows find it when the system boots. Leave it connected until you turn the system off, then you can disconnect the drive if required.

REL15 should have the fix for this, but the release is still being worked on so will be a while longer before its ready.

4 months ago this problem was reported in REL14.
REL15 was said would fix this problem.
3 months later and the latest download is still REL14.

What happened? I haven't been using Returnil for awhile so I'm not familiar with the intervals typical of releases but this seems rather long unless some other major bugs are also getting addressed. Is REL15 going to be a minor update (i.e., 3.2.x to 3.3.x) which will roll in many updates and why it's been 3 months waiting for this problem to get fixed?

I was thinking of tossing Returnil back into the security suite on my host (since I don't see when a 2012 version might come out and didn't maybe want to wait that long). Maybe I'll hold off if REL15 is to be a minor update instead of just a sub-minor update.

Hi VanguardLH,
It's progressing well and I anticipate a beta being available for testing in the next month or so. the delay has actually been due to the upgrades for the RSS project, but also for new products that are getting closer to their betas as well so we apologize for the wait.

The next RSS is going to a 3.3x version with a larger roll-up of resolutions than would be included in a simple 3.2x incremental upgrade and this has slowed the release schedule accordingly.

Kind regards
Mike

No, but we are testing the new 3.3x now and plan to begin limited public testing soon

Good, I thought it was going to be Rel 15 but no matter. I just hope the issue with Safely Remove Hardware has been corrected.
