Updates and insanely slow usage

While I love Eset I am getting sick to death at the speed of it. I am trying to play Sims Social on Facebook, but when Eset does a virus update or the startup scan it becomes unplayable. This also happens with normal web browsing as well, it slows to a crawl. I cannot abort the update either. in fact at present it has been trying to update the virus for the last 10 minutes or more. This has been since it updated to v5 before that I never had a single issue with it. My licence runs out in 4 weeks if this issue with speed and updates isn't fixed I doubt I'll renew at £25.

Perhaps you're using an older 1-core processor? When running full-screen mode applications, v5 switches to Gamer mode in which updates are suspended. For other applications, it is necessary to activate Gamer mode manually.
