We wish we knew exactly what's in store here, but we've found some exciting tidbits in Windows 8 that indicate that Microsoft's top-secret new filesystem -- Protogon -- is finally coming to fruition as part of Windows 8.

...

Steve Sinofsky said today that most of the new stuff in Windows 8 is disabled right now. Here's hoping someone will figure out how to unlock the hidden features.

I guess some things have to wait until beta.

it's way early in the game and there still some good stuff coming!

funky, you think W8 is good enough already to be used as your daily OS?

I'd recommend against it. I did it because I'm willing to put up with any issues that arise, adapt to a new UI(I adapt to change easily), and because all the apps that *I* use work ok, same can't be said for others.

You do realise this is a developer release. Its not feature complete and admittedly full of bugs !

Apparently, all that testers need do is fire up Command Prompt, they should make sure and run it with administrator privileges, enter the following command: format DriveLetter: /FS:protogon /Q and hit enter.

DriveLetter should be replaced with the actual drive letter for the partition or drive that is being formatted with Protogon.

Testers that already created Protogon volumes reveal that the partitions and drives with the new file system appear to not only be faster compared to when formatted with NTFS, but also allow the usage of more space.
An interesting quote from the comments.

Be aware that it isn't meant to be a daily OS though... I'm doing it because I'm willing to put up with wahtever issues come my way.

one thing i really like about winOS 8 that new less scary BSOD screen

as far speed = we can still crap it installing 4-10 softwares .........HIPS anti-malware anti-virus anti-spyware sandbox firewall cloud base .....................etc

and other softwares on it.

the main advantage or disadvantage of windows is its core and filesystem and its great support not only towards antivirus/anti-spyware/anti-malware...etc but the growth its database and vulnerabilities itself.

this seriously need to be check and improved.

but no change like what ubuntu did to unity or gnome to gnome 3

or

may be some do like it

one thing which make me real sad is windows Xp going to out of support which i still feel one of best windows OS ever created maybe many wont agree but i still love it on my laptop.

some of screenshots feel like running touch phone on desktop pretty scary

I think one important speed boost will come from the new file system that we'll soon see in Windows 8 (unavailable in dev build but apparently confirmed in the pirated leaks) and that could possibly have quite an effect, especially when it comes to installing lots of programs.

Me too. I'm particularly interested in MS thoughts on their security design for Windows 8 (mitigation enhanced). I'm running it for everyday use right now. Playing Supreme Commander 2 on it. Plus all my other software.

I hadn't read that, thanks. It seems every day I'm reading about security improvements.

You're welcome. I think these W8 security improvements (enhanced mitigation, Smart screen system wide, Windows Defender, new kernel protection) will cause me to stay with it as long as its stable.

As in games you've installed yourself?

Some apps don't run. My games that I've installed (borderlands and batman:aa and minecraft) run fine but Minecraft causes a BSOD unless you run it in compatibility mode.

No, the games that came with Win8. eg Labyrinth, Mopod, Zero Gravity, etc.

My son played Labyrinth when I first installed Win8 but now it won't open.

Hmm, Labyrinth and Mopod launch then sit at a blank screen for me, Zero Gravity works. It's possible one of the windows updates broke it (as it to be expected). You can try restarting (ctrl+alt+delete>power icon> restart).

1. Can the developer preview be used by anyone?

2. Can it be booted from without an install like a Linux Live CD?

3. Has NTFS been replaced with a new file system?

4. Has the registry been replaced with a single configuration file like I've heard people suggesting they do?

1. Yes

2. No

3. Unknown as of yet, a new file system exists, that is all we know.

4. No, I don't see the point unless destroying backwards compatibility of every program in existence is your goal.

Labyrinth was the only one we tried and it worked. But no longer. Restarting doesn't help.

apparently, there are some pirated versions of W8 out there that have Protogon unlocked.
