Yeah, that all makes sense....

I guess I don't know why they're even doing Metro. I still ask myself "Why Metro?". Why not just continue the traditional desktop with the next generation of OS improvements?

To unify the desktop and tablet OS. Metro apps have their own appeals.

Default Windows 8 Developer Preview expiration date extended

Quote:
Currently, the expiration date for Windows 8 Developer Preview is set to March 11, 2012, and the expiration date for Windows 8 Server Developer Preview is set to April 8, 2012. After you install this update, both expiration dates are postponed to January 15, 2013.

New, easier way to get languages

The new Language preferences section in Control Panel is the new one-stop place to find all Windows display languages in Windows 8. In the past, some languages were available through Windows Update, and others were distributed through the Microsoft Download Center.
Quote:
More languages than ever before

Microsoft will continue to be a market leader in language support with an additional 14 new display languages for Windows 8, bringing the total to 109 languages. (For reference, here are the 95 languages in which Windows 7 is currently available). With these additional languages, Windows will provide a native language version of Windows for over 4.5 billion people.

As a native speaker of English—as distinct from its transatlantic cousin, American—Windows has long been the source of considerable emotional trauma for me. Though the operating system has always let us use a UK keyboard layout, it has insisted on offending our sensibilities with such non-words as "favorites" and "colors."

Microsoft readies final Windows 8 Consumer Preview build 8250

By Tom Warren

Microsoft is on the verge of signing off the final version of its Windows 8 Consumer Preview. That is the word from a number of sources who tell us that the company has stopped compiling beta builds of Windows 8. The final build will be signed off officially on Friday and is expected to be numbered 8250.

Who else is planning on making this their primary OS? I don't care much for Metro but there are several killer features -

- sign-in with Live ID, and syncing of all settings across pc's
- sync my files with Skydrive (25GB cloud sync!)
- faster and lighter
- built in pdf, built in MSE
- free till Jan 2013

And its Windows so it will be compatible with nearly everything. This is an easy decision for me. In fact buying a new copy on Windows 7 now doesn't make any sense (e.g. building new pc, or upgrading old OS).

Windows 8 (beta) will be my main OS in a few days, I think. I resisted the urge to install the pre-beta (or developer preview) but I'm totally unable to resist the urge to install the beta (or consumer preview).

There are lots of other new features/improvements that Defcon didn't mention, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_new_to_Windows_8 . And even this wiki list is incomplete too.

There was an update that pushed the expiration date into 2013 or something like that. The link should be somewhere here.

MS has said that it won't unless you're on an ARM device.

That was for the Developer Preview - no word yet on the Public (Beta) Preview expiration.

It will be the exact same date or longer (due to being released later).

tnx m8!

frankly, there's nothing in there that excites me and worth the upgrade price.
for me anyway.
i'll wait and see...

looking forward to see what you folks here think about the Beta (Consumer Preview) out in couple of days.
