[SOLVED]Can you recommend a fast/unobtrusive/non-HIPS no bs firewall?

    Congratulations! :argh:

If you got this far and understood my threads title than you most likely understand English well :thumb: :thumb: :D

I know this has been asked a bazillion times but I hoping to get my memory refreshed on some well known and maybe not so well known Windows Firewall alternatives.

I am fed up with HIPS so please none of that gooey stuff and I don't need much Phishing protection and all those site checker bells ans whistles that slow a browser down! I have common sense and it hasn't failed me, internet surfing wise, yet!

    Thanks so much *puppy*

Look'n'Stop with Phant0m ruleset. You have to configure it for your apps, then you're done.

The smallest footprint (in mem/cpu time) that I know of and very robust with ARP/SPI/low-level packet control.

No HIPS or other resource consuming features.

    x32 and x64 versions available:

You also might want to turn off system anomaly detection as well.

In your opinions, does disabling these two components (Process Monitor and System Anomaly Detection) cripple the firewall... or does it simply streamline it into exactly what the OP is looking for, "a fast/unobtrusive/non-HIPS no bs firewall"?

Edit in: I would add that if one were to disable Process Monitor and System Anomaly Detection, it would then also be advisable to switch off the Manual Control: User Input for All Alerts setting in favor of the Standard Control: Alert and Auto-Respond setting. I'm trying all three changes myself, right now. :)

Those options you mention need to be turned off if a person just wants to use Private Firewall as purely a firewall.

Install Comodo firewall and then deactivate permanently D+ (it's like uninstall the HIPS but you have to do it through the settings)
And it's free and use around 3 and 6MB of RAM

    Thanks to everyone :D

I haven't tried LnS so I'm gonna give it a shot along with the Phant0m rule set. I hear a lot of good things about the Phant0m rule set but I can't really find out what it does and why its so much better than the stock rules that come with LnS. If anyone knows can you please tell me *puppy*

If you are on Windows Vista or Windows 7, stop looking for alternatives, just use Windows Firewall. I can't think of any reason to use a third-party firewall to use instead of Windows Firewall for inbound protection.

If you want outbound protection you can do achieve this by using Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, there is a great thread about this in the "other firewalls" forum. If you don't want to go through the hassle of Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, but you still want outbound protection, there are some great options. These options have already been mentioned.

On Win 7 64 bits, I'd use Windows FW for inbound protection and my router FW for outbound protection. Is it good enough? I feel the Advanced Settings in Windows FW are too complicated for the coomon mortal!

Don't you mean the other way around?

    @ Matt,

I wanted to post similar to your comment but was afraid of a backlash :ouch: I'm glad someone else posted it instead, because I agree with you 100% :)

Okay through out the years i have tried most of the freeware firewalls, but today i saw your post and decided to try out Windows 7 firewall control...and darn i really like the combo of Windows 7 firewall with Windows 7 firewall control. All these years i wasted my time with trying out those freeware Firewalls, just to find out today that the build in one(Well the windows 7 firewall at least.) works great as well in this combination. :D :thumb:

Indeed, Windows firewall control is a nice complement to Win7 firewall w/advanced security.

Online ArmorFree is better. More features. Even with the HiPS turned off. And on the odd chance you might need a HiPS for a one-off situation, just click 'activate Hips'.
