Because they want that AV, of course.

Still, it's pretty silly with there being such great free programs out there.

It's like buying a door lock in a back alley from a crack junkie, 'Hey, he might be honest, right?'

Yes, but like you said, they want that other AV without having to pay for it.

How exactly is something like this news? Is it news that keygens, cracks, etc may come extra spicy?

I'd consider it news if a report would come out stating keygens, etc are of no danger.

It's not, this happens all the time, no one really cares enough to post about it.

Some people still lack the information they need that they are lured to this kind of danger.

I had this office-mate who once bought pirated AV with a keygen (it was Norton AV). Naturally the virus was masked and after a month or so as he was using it he had infections that he could not contain(spreading like wildfire to his office files(copy) at home until it was too late to recover it). Called for help but we could not do anything aside from a clean wipe/OS re-install. He told me he was updated and it's a premium one etc..etc..and continued to trust his install.

He could not pay(or doesn't want to pay) for a premium license and had been on a 30 day trial previously...used another 30 day trial and jumped to another...well that was his history until purchasing a cheap pirated one. That was a bitter pill for him. Lost all his hard-work especially the designs that he kept only at home.

At that particular time when he was jumping from one trial to another, information about freeware versions that are very good alternative(as to how it will be sufficient enough) for an ordinary-non-forum dweller was close to zero. All the advertisements/maketing was tailored "for" premium versions. And that made him want a premium version and not try the free version. The ads were so beautiful that he shut out good freeware versions from his head.

At the time I was using AVG free and still having some infection I surfed the web and came to know Wilders'(and other forums as well) and my eyes was opened to "layered security"..then virtualization. Almost 60% at the office(mold manufacturing) never heard of SBIE/Malwarebytes or even the term "layered security" that they laugh and tell me I'm paranoid about it.

...And then the story happened..and all of a sudden they are asking questions.

Now the everyday individual (ordinary-non-forum dweller)will always use only one AV thinking it's enough and have the Windows firewall on but doesn't have a ~ Snipped as per TOS ~ about using it(some leave it off). When they get infected they are dismayed and will not use that AV again. The internet is full of reported instances of infections which are proof that there are still a substantial number of AV/Suite users(free versions and even premium ones) who still need information as to how to use his/her app efficiently/properly. For that person(ill-informed/uninformed etc) he/she will say, "I want a more powerful one.."(something like that..) and if the individual is an "Ebenezer Scrooge"...there goes the hunt for a cheap alternative.

Not surprised at all; not at all...

-Head over the BitDefender Virus Analyst Doina Cosovan and Slap her.

-Go down to the Malware City Blog and request for their Shutting Down.

An anti-virus company blog posts about a virus, what a surprise! LOL. Maybe you should go buy BitDefender now, since that's all AV blogs are usually good for, scaremongering you into their products.

If they don't have a good "outbreak" to scare you with, they have to resort to keygens.

Would something like a keygen work when run in Sandboxie?

edit: NVM I'm thinking of patching.

If I were BitDefender folks I'd research for keygens and patches for their own products and report the % of clean or dirty ones.

I suppose this would be of no interest to them. Or, are there no keygens/patches for their own products? Or, are they all clean?

Patching SBIE now would be futile, what with the activation check it does often. Kaspersky is also next to impossible to pirate. Everybody else, I see it daily, and, no, there's no shock here about cracks sometimes being infected. It's a risk you decide to take or don't.

There are some, but most stick to Norton, Avast or try in vain with Kaspersky.

Maybe so... I really don't chase keygens/patches, but a quick search on Google came up with some sources... Whether working or simply a way to get people chasing these keygens/patches to infect their systems, is another talk.

My point is: Keygens/Patches are nothing new, and it's also not new, the fact they may install malicious code.

I would considering news something like: 99% of keygens/patches are SAFE to use!!! Use them!! We even provide you with the links! We truly care about your safety!!!
