Default Black screen at startup

Running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit
When I boot the computer it is around 40 seconds before the "Start Windows" message appears. This is unacceptable. I am being advised to remove ESET from my Computer and install MSE. If this is what I think it is I don't want any part of it. One obnoxious thing in MSE is the Movie maker. Also wants me to install "Soluto". Have no idea what that is.

I haven't done anything yet and I don't want to be without my ESET. It has served me well. Would like to solve the Black screen at startup though. I realize the Black Screen problem is not an ESET's problem. It's the advice i have gotten that I question.

Hello Shankle
I can probely not give you a solution to your long startup time , there can be many reasons, everything from malware to corrupted files and conflicting drivers . It would probably be easier to find the needle in the haystack . But anyway have you tried to scan the system with a second opinion AV scanner like Malwarebytes, just to be sure. Do you have many things that run at startup? if so trim your Msconfig. And finally do you have system restore enable, if yes then you can always try to go back to a restore point before you experienced the black screen and long boot time. And finally just a friendly advice one of the best programs you can have on your pc besides a good Av Scanner is a disk imaging software, that takes a picture of your hard drive, that you can use for any disaster that might come your computer’s way.

Best of luck my friend

Who or what is advising you? MSE does not include MovieMaker or Soluto. Never had as it is an AV. What makes you think it is Eset causing that 40 sec delay? If you are convinced though remove it and see if the same occurs with some other AV

Hi Noobstick,
Have scanned the system and it found nothing wrong.
Went into Msconfig and found very little at startup.
I have system restore disabled. I take weekly regular backups using Clonezilla-live and have had excellent results with it.

Hi Cudni,
I have temporarily removed ESET and that didn't make any
difference. So it is NOT ESET causing the problem.
I assume that MSE is Microsoft Essentials.

It would appear that you have an operating system issue, possibly relating to a slow start-up item or items. Ask the nice folks at the Microsoft Windows Seven board. Please post back the links to your conversations there, to this thread so that they may be followed-up.

Thank you.

Ran autorun. Disabled a few things but most of it was Windows stuff.
Still have the 40 second black screen.

depending on your description, i'd say errors or reports about timeouts occuring would be my guess. Seems like the computer is waiting for something to respond.

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro today and the Black screen was there for 35 to 40 seconds in it's pristine state.
So it's Windows causing the problem.

Do you have an external USB Drive connected to your system?

Read this is a problem for some systems over at Windows 7 http://www.sevenforums.com/performan...-attached.html

Hi Ronjor,
I tried the item from Microsoft. It had no effect on the problem. I did notice in powering down and up that the items in the System Configuration changed. I think it should be a "Normal Startup" and it gets changed to "Selective Startup".
I hear the bridge in New Jersey is quite high.
