Microsoft patent may ruin Skype, may make VoIP spy and pry easy for gov't.

Quote:
A Microsoft patent mentions both law enforcement and government having a need to sometimes "monitor communications," but is aimed at VoIP "recording agents" for "silently recording communications," and possibly indicates future Skype surveillance.

Well, it's not like the government wasn't already spying on Skype. All this is guys is another patent MS can make money off of and use in yet another of their "patent suits" down the line. MS would have you believe they created everything that exists on the Internet. It's purely a business move for MS.

Thanks CloneRanger,

Maybe there is some delay getting it into the DB of patents.

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office: Patent Number Search
Results of Search in US Patents Collection db for:
PN/20,110,153,809: 0 patents.

From the Patent

Quote:
Modification may include, for example, adding, changing, and/or deleting data within the data.

That's a heck of a LOT more than just monitoring/recording etc ! In other words you would NOT be able to trust your connection

Having briefly looked at the Patent, i've spotted a GLARING error in it which "could" lead to it being invalidated I won't make it public, just yet anyway, but will save it to pass on to for eg the EFF LotsaLulz

Quote:
Briefly, aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to silently recording communications. In aspects, data associated with a request to establish a communication is modified to cause the communication to be established via a path that includes a recording agent. Modification may include, for example, adding, changing, and/or deleting data within the data. The data as modified is then passed to a protocol entity that uses the data to establish a communication session. Because of the way in which the data has been modified, the protocol entity selects a path that includes the recording agent. The recording agent is then able to silently record the communication.

Encryption like end-to-end? I believe Zfone works with skype. It is developed by Phil Zimmerman of PGP fame. I have used it with Ichat and it works great.

This is the last time I ever use skype. I have always been wary of it but now I will use Redphone and Zfone for VOIP.

Probably is. Take an old router (or set up an untangle box) and watch every thing a fresh windows install connects to on start up. Something tells me thats not all updates and such. I usually block all that stuff (all MS IP's and Gov IP's) (besides updates) at the router level just in case.
