I'm referring to networks such as i2p, tor, freenet, entropy, and gnut.

1. What are the most popular such services?
   
2. What are the most obscure of these services?
   
3. Where can I find a list of free anonymous peer-to-peer networks (I tried Google)?

I'm thinking of services that post websites.

Amongst the networks you are speaking, I think the most popular (or more precisely the best known and most widely used) is Tor. I think the most obscure of these services is Freenet, and maybe Gnunet.


Concerning the most popular anonymous and encrypted P2P softwares, (ie the one's where you can find the most data to download), there are StealthNet, OneSwarm, RetroShare, Calypso (ex Kommute), AntsP2P. There are also Imule (emule on I2P), I2PSnark (torrent on I2P), I2Phex(Gnutella on I2P). Freemulet (emule on freenet).

As usually the the most encrypted are not the necessary most anonymous. I think the most anonymous of all P2P softwares would be HerbivoreFS, if it would exist: With it, you have plausible deniability even against a global observer:

Hi, this is my first post on this forum. I have two questions about Freenet:

(1) The content on Freenet is supposed to be totally anonymous, but is it possible for someone to detect that you are using the Freenet program itself? (this could look suspicous)

(2) Are there a lot of viruses on Freenet and does this pose a significant risk to your computer or your anonymity?

That looks pretty interesting. So if I understand what they are saying, a person could offer their connection to be used for people in countries that block ordinary content, and who also block Tor, VPN's and other known proxies. Is that correct?

(1) Freenet is a tool promoted to and used by political activists. How does this make you look suspicious?

(2) I doubt anyone would want to use Freenet as a virus vector. Sure you could be compromised if you downloaded a trojan but that has nothing to do with Freenet.

Awesome, I have just one other question.

The American police uploaded a file onto limewire that they disguised as kiddy p0rn. The file alerted the police of the downloader's IP and home address.

I have no intention of using Freenet for this purpose, but is there anything to stop someone doing something similar which could potentially expose my address?

Anonymous opdarknet recently did that on Tor hidden service site Hard Candy. They disguised malware as Tor security update. Some users were dumb enough to install it, and opdarknet published their IP addresses.

Nothing. Just don't install stuff unless you know and trust its source. And, if you're concerned about leaking your true IP address, be especially careful with machines that know it.
