Exclamation Backup and Restore 2011 Advanced - P2V Copy

Thought I would convert my current XP system to a Virtual Disk for use under Virtual PC 2007. The process started ok, volume was mounted and partition was copied with an error, the progress bar got to 40% then a window popped up cannot complete copy operation with open files.

So I clicked retry - nothing happened. Clicked view open files and was presented with a list that matches my task manager. Clicked close open files and retry and nothing happened apart from a confirmation dialog.

So it seems the cluster copy cant be completed with open files, one of which (ESET AV) cant be closed anyway due to self protection. Does anyone test these functions? A skip open files button may have been useful to complete the task.

If your a/v or another process is interfering - you may need to turn it off, or do the operation from outside windows.

I asked it to close the files and retry, in a very long list and it didn't. Only way to turn off AV is to uninstall it as the service is always there.

I give up with this feature. Ran the operation again on a live system and manually closed all the tray programs but it said the system processes were stopping the operation from being completed like svchost etc. I dont have another partition with an OS so I cant do it from 'outside', clearly a major bug.

I didn't have any trouble doing it.

There is something unusual about your system, it seems.

Why don't you use my little app. to make a winpe3 boot disc;

make a winpe3 boot disc

Cool Re: Backup and Restore 2011 Advanced - P2V Copy

Thanks for that SIW2. I created a PE Bootdisk with Paragon 2011, interesting that Panda Cloud Antivirus said there was a virus in the PECreator file on extraction.

After booting from the Win 7 disk I opened Paragon and the P2V Copy and other functions were greyed out. Backup and restore were available and I could see the disk map but all the Virtualization functions were greyed out. Oh well thanks for trying.

PS: Looks like a very good recovery tool the disk you have made. Panda Identified produkey.exe as a trojan for info.

Yes, don't worry about produkey - it is bound to do that.

Your P2V copy will work from winpe - My mistake.

I put a generic settings.xml in because I didnt know what paragon product would be added.

To run P2V Copy, navigate to X:\Program Files\Par\Program and click on VMCREATE.EXE

Ok I dont know what the problem is but I ran from PE and ran vmcreate.exe from the paragon folder and it errored out with could not lock drive exclusively. I have tried this inside a virtual machine and it seems to work.

I wonder if it's because I used seagate disc wizard to clone the drive originally from a smaller driver or some file is being created on the c: drive that is preventing vmcreate from locking the drive. Either way it wont run.

Further investigation showed that it was Explorer.exe preventing exclusive rights to locking C drive so I closed that and the process tried to cluster copy but then crashed with a memory reference error, don't think I'm getting anywhere fast.

There is something strange going on if you can't lock the drive from PE.

I managed to get it to run on another XP machine but after completion it said there were cross linked files so had to run chkdsk then run again. But it wont run on my main XP machine no idea whats goin on, backup runs fine.
