The company said it affected less than 0.08 per cent of the Gmail user base. This doesn't sound like a big number, but considering that the Gmail user base is in the millions that still amounts to thousands of people losing their emails.

LOL, publicity nightmare and so far not handled well.

Be interesting to see whether Google has a back-up.
Hope the users do? ( sure they do )
Other companies are subject to 'issues' too, but this is the confirmation re cloud fragility neh.

We use paid Google Apps Premier @ work. Last week, Google had one of our main shared calendars down for about 5 hours. When it came back, it was just as it was when it went MIA. (Granted, Premier comes with good, one on one support. I spoke to a Google rep on the phone and they made a ticket up on it and then followed up by email to make sure things were running normally.)

Obviously, the free version doesn't have this level of support. But based on our experience last week, I would feel ok that they are trying to get things set right again. Time will tell...

Two days after tens of thousands of Google Gmail users discovered that their e-mail, chat histories and contacts had disappeared from their accounts, the problem still is not fixed.

Google announced Monday night that the Gmail issue, which struck some users on Sunday, was caused by a bug in a storage software update. While Google had said Monday afternoon that the issue would be resolved for all users within 12 hours, the company now says that the problem has not been fixed but will be "soon."

The good news is that Google reported that users' e-mails, contacts, folders and settings have not been lost. They are retrievable and should be back in users' accounts once the problem is resolved.

Four days after an outage hit about 40,000 users of Google's Gmail service, most users are up and running once again, the company said Thursday.

"The problem with Google Mail should be resolved," the company wrote on the Google Apps Status Dashboard early this morning. "We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support."

However, the report noted that the problem, which first struck some users on Sunday, isn't fully fixed yet.

I access Gmail through Mailwasher so I didn't notice till I read the thread, I had to confirm my backup email address and signed in all my email and setting were there.
