Default Chrome portable: faster than desktop?

I have tried the Chrome browser on my older machine, and it has been disappointingly slow.

I recently put the portable versoin on a USB drive for work, and hapened to try it on the old computer at home. It could be my imagination, but it seems much more snappy....

Is the portable version faster?

I understand that portable versions, in general, do less writing to disk. That may account for their being snappier. Experts?
