Acronis can still restore that image to a partition smaller than 18724 MB.

Repartitioning takes time if one works with multiple images/PCs. At work, our IT person just uses ATI iso on USB, he doesn't need to worry about partition size when restoring an image.

    Sadeghi85,

I was referring to restoring into a partition. If you restore into unallocated space that is a different matter. With the WinXP system I just mentioned I restored into unallocated space and chose 1577 for the partition size. After the restore I booted into Windows and the partition Free Space was less than 1 MB. Not what you would do in practice but I did it as a test.

Edit... I don't use Acronis TI anymore but I recall it doesn't do sector based restores so it should be able to restore into a smaller partition. Ghost 2003 is similar.

So if you wanted to restore that image to a 15000 MB partition would that be possible by just deleting the partition and restoring to the unallocated space or does it still need more than 18724 MB empty space?

How does it create the image, if not sector based? :doubt:

That's a good point. You would need 18724 MB of unallocated space to restore into. Then the restore app would do a resize to your chosen value. This probably doesn't apply to Acronis True Image. It doesn't apply to Ghost 2003.

I think (not sure about recent versions) Acronis TI is similar to Ghost 2003. A Ghost 2003 image is called file based. When the image is restored all of the data is restored to the start of the partition and not to the LBA values of the original partition. If you look at the partition in a defrag app you will see all of the data has been restored to the start of the partition with no data free areas intervening. It is a solid block. It looks nothing like the original partition. So if you had spent time defragging the original partition with Perfect Disk or Diskeeper to get "Optimal placement" it will be gone after the Ghost 2003 restore.

I haven't used Acronis TI much, so not sure, but judging from the size of differentials before and after a defrag I'd guess the recent versions(at least 2010 & 2011) are sector based so I think normally the restored partition should look like the original.

    Edit:

I just did a test in VM, before restoration: attachmentid=226250 after: attachmentid=226251 looks similar to the original partition.

I think I remember when our IT guy restored an image of a 30GB partition to a 10GB partition, Acronis asked for confirmation I guess because it had sectors beyond 10GB, it then restored the partition. I guess it does it by moving those sectors to empty ones and editing the MFT on the fly to reflect those changes. I think other restore apps do the same but only after fully restoring the partition.

Odd...maybe the release isn't on the server you are downloading from. I downloaded it fine. Hopefully it will work for you soon.

FYI...I did a test backup and restore with the new version fine. Not sure if this is a new feature as I don't recall seeing this before, but with the April version you can double-click on a saved image to immediately open it up as a mapped drive.

    Thanks.

@napoleon, that has been a DS feature for quite a while now. ;)

@andy, of course that's your call ...and while I too am disappointed in the lack of a change-log with each new build, if you like DS as much as I do it's not really a big deal to update once a month (takes less than a minute)!

While DS does not have a built-in burner, under Advanced Options you will find Maximum size of a single image file _____
...where you can enter whatever value you want for the maximum (single) image file size. Then DS will automatically split the total image into as many parts (files) as required to the destination HDD - but you would have to burn these segments to DVDs using your own burner (imho it's not a very good idea to save your backup images on CD/DVD).

you should store your image to another drive than your OS.

if your OS drive fails, there goes the images as well.

    yes.
unless your drive were to have a catastrophic failure.

if you decide to save to another partition on the same drive make sure you keep backups on other drives as well. :)
