Default Congratulation to BitDefender 2011

Hi everyone,
For the first time we see that the firewall of BitDefender is at the top of Firewall Challenge: http://www.matousec.com/projects/pro...ge/results.php
In one word, i say congratulation to BitDefender with this version of 2011

Meh I guess your not familiar with the Matousec bashing.

I suggest doing a search for Matousec here at the forums.

Putting the rights or wrongs of the Matousec testing aside, you should also note what the full report says:

"Although BitDefender passes many tests it is questionable whether it can protect common users against malware.
The problem with BitDefender is that in case of many techniques it gives absolutely no information about what is going on. Just a simple Allow/Block pop-up window is displayed without any details about the action to be blocked.
Moreover, “blocking an action” with BitDefender actually terminates the offending process instead of blocking the particular action. This also lowers the effectiveness of BitDefender's protection."

You may want to hold back on those congratulations for now.

It was a great improvement.
Can the BitDefender Firewall outrank the ones developed by
Comodo, Online Solutions, Outpost, and Kaspersky?
Time (and Matousec) will tell...

It can't But, the idea is to have lots of information about the offending code to know what it is doing when, where, how and why. While a program is blocked but still trying to run, it's easier to trace the code to find this information - to see what it may effect and how. This can lead to better protection and better understanding of the malicious code.

It may also be that because BitDefender only terminates the code it does not block the code from starting up again. The code could mutate to a version BitDefender cannot defend against.

You can look in the matousec's archive. BitDefender had 24% before that test. So i think its a great work...

It is a great technical improvement but as the report indicates, it is not a practical improvement. It's difficult not to miss the irony that a set of tests which many view as technically correct but practically of no use should highlight a product showing the same characteristics during testing.
