Default Need help w/ HijackThis log

I started getting the following message when trying to start my Choicemail email filtering program:

This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus. Please reinstall it.

I tried scan disk, reinstalling, etc. but couldn't. A google search on the message brought me here, where I discovered this is associated with the Coolwebsearch browser hijacker. I started up my rarely used IE browser, and sure enough I got about:blank for my home page address, with some search page in the browser window. I followed the instructions here, downloaded ad-aware, ran that, downloaded Spybot S&D, ran that, downloaded Hijack This and ran that, and saved the log. During the, I had to reboot. Each time, when my pc tried to autostart Choicemail, I got the same error message so I assume I still have a remnant of Coolwebsearch hanging in there somewhere. Please help! I can't run my choicemail till I fix this. Thanks!! Attached is my HijackThis log:

Kent,

Thanks for the coaching. I followed instructions. I also took advantage of the CWShredder advice on prevention and downloaded/installed Windows XP SP1. Here's the latest HijackThis log:

Shortly after posting what looked like clean results, I was using my NetCaptor browser and the IE browser popped open by itself with a porn site web page. (I wasn't visiting any porn site w/ NetCaptor!!!!) I reran HijackThis and looks like it found more this time. So much for the SP1 preventing this stuff. Here's the latest log:

BTW - forgot to mention - after following instructions, when I reboot and startup tries to load my Choicemail software, I get that same error message that I mentioned in my first post.

Hi tbyrnes,

Download this file: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/pv.zip and unzip it to the desktop. It will not work if you run it from inside the zip.
Be sure to have one Internet Explorer window open, then double click on the runme.bat.
When you doubleclick runme.bat you will get a screen with a few options. Please select option 1 for explorer dll's by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
The txt file that gets made then is the one we need.

Under the Post Windows you will find the Additional Options, please check Disable smilies in text, or you will get an error when trying to post the log.

Regards,

Pieter

Ok. I really appreciate you folks spending the time to work with me on this. Here is the log that runme.bat generated when choosing option 1. I had an IE browser window open at the time. Instead of opening to a porn page, it opened to a search page.

Yikes.

This will get complicated.

Click Start > Run > regedit > OK
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Highlight the Windows key (left pane)

Right-click on "AppInit_Dlls" (right pane)
Right click and select: "Modify Binary Data"
Note: the default should read (hidden value = 0000 00 00)

If the above is not the default = hidden dll to reinstall the hijack.
You should be able to see the "path" to the infected dll.

Make a note of the filename and location (folder)

In this case the "Modify Binary Data" shows:

Code:
Value name: AppInit_DLLs Value Data: 0000 00 00 3A 00 77 00 ..:.\w. 0008 69 00 6E 00 6F 00 i.n.d.o. 0010 77 00 73 00 73 00 w.s.\.s. 0018 79 00 73 00 65 00 y.s.t.e. 0020 6D 00 33 00 5C 00 m.3.2.\. 0028 63 00 6F 00 2E 00 c.o.m... 0030 64 00 6C 00 00 00 d.l.l...

where Windows\System32\com.dll would be the one we are looking for.
Let me know which one you find.

Regards,

Pieter

Ok, tried that. Right click on AppInit_Dlls and selecting Modify Binary Data shows value data of "0000".

Interesting though - as I nagivated through the registry, I almost thought there were two entries for Microsoft under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE. Turns out the second one is "Mirosoft" and has some really weird looking keys, like "yŒ„`u‡ˆXuˆy". I wonder if I've got a slight corruption in the registry or if I need to download one of those tools to clean/repair the registry or something.

Never heard that one before. Do yo mind if we keep that one for later?

Check if your version of pv.zip has option 7 for appinit clear. It has the regmerge in it to clear the bad protocols. If so run it and run cwshredder immediatly after.

Reboot, run HijackThis again and post a new log.

Ok, did all that. Its looking better. AAW finds nothing now. IE Browser opens with a blank about:blank start page. But I'm still getting that error message when my Choicemail software starts:

This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus. Please reinstall it.

The StartPage you can change to whateer you prefer in IE under Tools > Internet-options > on the General tab
Your log is clean now. I think reinstalling Choicemail would be best.
I am not familiar with the program, but I would advise making some backups if possible.

Ok, I'll try re-installing Choicemail. Thanks for all your help!! I'm not sure why you all put so much time in sharing your expertise to help others, but I really appreciate it.

BTW - is there somewhere I can go to learn more about how to prevent this type of nonsense from hijacking my pc in the future? I did install the XP SP1, but I'm wondering if there is more I should/could be doing.

Thanks, and have a great day!!

Well there are lots of things you can do really. Read here:

Glad we could help.

If I had never started helping, I wouldn't have had any expertise anyway.

Help!! I'm still struggling with this. No matter how much I clean w/ Ad-Aware, Spybot, PV, AnitVir, HijackThis, CWShredder, I'm still getting the error message "This program has been damaged...." and SpywareGuard is still catching changes to my start page, etc. Here is my latest Hijack Log:

These latest hijackers are proving extremely difficult to eradicate, some of the finsest brains in malware fighting are working on fixes for them, but it's proving difficult.

We know that it causes that error message in several programs and suspect it's something to do with changing the program permissions for reading/writing to windows.

we haven't yet tracked it down but will do eventually, please bear with us and we are doing all we can to discover a cure for you

Thanks for the response Derek. I'm sure I'm not alone in the eager anticpation of a "cure" for this nasty hijack virus. As a known infected user, if I can do anything to help (check things on my PC, trial a fix, etc.) please don't hesitate to let me know.

Meanwhile, thanks to you and all on this forum who spend so much time helping novices like me clean things up.

I just noticed something odd about my pc that may or may not be related to this virus. I have Windows XP running, and I seem to two copies of the svchost.exe file. One is in the Windows directory, one is in the windows/system32 directory. Wave my mouse over the one in the windows/system32 directory and it claims to be from microsoft. Its 12.5 KB in size.

The one in the windows directory doesn't claim to be from Microsoft, was created today, and is only 3.53KB in size.

I looked in Taskmanager and multiple svhost.exe processes are running. One is owned by my userid, the rest are owned by SYSTEM. I looked at processes using Process Viewer and sure enough one svchost.exe running from the windows directory, the rest are running from the Windows/system32 directory.

If I look at the tree view in Process Viewer, I can see that that only one svchost.exe was linked to explorer.exe. Sure enough, its the non-microsoft one from the Windows directory.

Anyone else suffering from this nasty virus see the same thing?

c:\windows\svchost is bad

boot into safe mode & delete it

it's probably part of the problem, but we know it will come back probably when you connect to the net again

one work around is to use your firewall and block all access to & from this range of IP numbers
81.211.105.0-81.211.105.255

that blocks the cws servers completely so they cannot get to your computer,

some legitimate servers will also get blocked but not many
