LimeWire Gives Up the Ghost, Shuts Down P2P Filesharing Client

Last spring, music file-sharing service LimeWire suffered a crushing blow in federal court. This is the net result: The company is shutting down its core software–though it insists it’s not doing that exactly. It’s the victory the big music labels have been seeking for some time.

The company says it will comply with a court injunction to turn off “the searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality, and/or all functionality” of its software, which remains one of the most popular methods of finding free–and illegal–music on the Web.

I'd hardly call it a "victory". Anyone who has gone anywhere near Limewire in the last few years gets what they get. None of those services are going to beat a well-seeded torrent to begin with, and Limewire became nothing but malware heaven.

agreed, but a lot of the average people still use limewire, i see it on many peoples computers at my university, altho there is a large amount of people that are starting to get into torrents which is good

Oh I'm sure there are a lot of years old clients out there still. It took forever for people to finally leave Kazaa. Ahh, the original Kazaa, now there's a trip down memory lane, lol.

P2P file-sharing enabler LimeWire finally lost its long-running battle against music-industry heavy hitters on Tuesday.

"As of today, we are required to stop distribution and support of LimeWire’s P2P file-sharing service as a result of a court-ordered injunction," reads a statement by Lime Company CEO George Searle on the company's website.

"Naturally, we're disappointed with this turn of events," Searle continues. Naturally.

The injunction was handed down by the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. It permanently enjoins and restrains LimeWire from distributing its client software.

Not a moment too soon, I might add.

@DasFox: The only problem with Usenet is that you generally have to pay a monthly fee for it. And, if you're downloading anything less than legal, well, you can see where the problem would be, lol.

This event is irrelevant. Music industry can't stop filesharing, no matter how hard they try, people will continue finding ways to circunvent it.

I see that many successful artists already understood this, I have the impression that they are all doing way more real life shows/concertos/tours then before.

It's fair enough, artists need to work hard as everyone else and not only sit and wait for people to buy their taped things.

Yeah, lol, I remember for a couple of weeks there was all sorts of noise on the forums about a specific sized malicious file flooding the thing. I really never found it good for anything other than single songs, and seemed hard as hell trying to get anything that was better than 128kbps in quality.

What most don't understand is that artists get their money from concerts and merchandise. Album money almost in its entirety goes to the label and overhead costs. They may not be able to completely kill filesharing, but there is a lot they can do to slow it down:

1. Stop charging 100 or more dollars for big, mainstream act concerts. Generally that is no longer affordable, and leads to empty seats.

2. Loosen the leash on new or less established acts. Let the ARTIST decide what to put out there, and don't force them to replicate a current artist or sound. That's how you create another one-hit wonder, not an artist/band that will continue to bring revenue.

3. Stop the suing. They won't admit it, of course, but the costs they are shelling out to sue is laughably less than the amounts they win from cases. They'll go broke just trying to "protect their losses", forget the amount they lose through file sharing.

4. This is a bit like number 3, but, stop making clones. We don't need 3 or 4 copies of a hot act. This has been going on for many decades of course, but it's been pervasive since about 1996.


Music exists because of creativity and differences. You lose either one completely, and we truly will have a "day the music died".

LOL, without realizing it, I downloaded limewire yesterday to put on my friends box.

So take a look at the screen shot and notice the creation date!

I mean boy talk about timing...

Now the funny thing is I have it on a flash drive that I copied it to today and it didn't change the created date, but if I want to copy it to a usb drive it will change it, hmm I wonder if there is a way to copy it to a usb I have to back it up and not mess with the created date?

Another one mostly good for single songs, but yeah, that blew Limewire away. The only ones outside of Bittorrent that have ever been truly great were WinMX and Kazaa (early versions). Emule was always best for obscure things, but it's gone downhill over the last year.

With the plethora of stream recorders and Youtube audio grabbers,etc. that are available and given Limewire's recent performance I just look at this closure as reducing the spread of malware.

Stream recorders and YouTube grabbers have one thing in common, they record what is almost always very poor quality audio. Even paid music services usually are 128Kbps, and Youtube audio can contain everything from skips to giggling kids in the background. And that's when the YouTube police hasn't already deleted the audio for infringement. Bittorrent is beautiful for the simple fact that, unlike the Kazaa's, Limewires and such of the world, for every torrent website death, 3-4+ more are born.

P.S, Youtube isn't impervious to malware infected uploads either. Besides, malware is an internet problem, not just a P2P and porn problem.
